2008 Review Sheet for Earth Sciences 2 Quiz #2 The exam will be 100 questions, multiple-choice and T/F. You will need a ParSCORE form F-1712 (full page, pink scantron form, available at the bookstore: BRING ONE and some #2 PENCILS to the EXAM). ALL material is from lectures. Use your notes, web lecture notes and discussion information to prepare. Do not worry about the book, as that is supplementary information for this part of the course. Questions will address all material covered since Exam #1 – Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes, Volcanoes. Basic areas listed below: 1. What is the primary evidence for Plate Tectonics? What is Sea-floor spreading, and what is its relationship to Continental Drift? 3. Understand the notions of rheology of Earth materials, and how they account for short time and long time properties of the Earth. What is the lithosphere and how is it related to plate tectonics? 4. What are the different types of seismic waves (body and surface)? What times of shaking motions does each cause? 5. What causes earthquakes, and how do we study them? 6. Why are magnetic reversals important for studying plate tectonics and geological history? 7. Why did large earthquakes strike Kobe, Japan and Northridge, California? Were these on a major plate boundary? What was the nature of destruction in each event? 8. Why are there different types of rocks in different volcanic regions? How does the type of magma influence the volcanic behavior? 9. What causes volcanoes, and why do they differ? What processes cause melting in different tectonic environments? How hot is the interior of the Earth? How extensive is melting in the crust/mantle/core? 10. How do we try to predict earthquakes? Volcanic eruptions? 11. What are the hazards associated with earthquakes and volcanoes? How do we mitigate the hazards from earthquakes versus volcanoes? 12. How do volcanoes affect climate and temperature?
