However, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson died at Chancellorsville. The North though won at the Battle of Antietam and the moment began to shift away from the South to the North. 2. Why did Robert E. Lee decide to invade the Union and go on the offensive against the North at Gettysburg? Robert E. Lee invaded the Union because his supplies were low. This was a change from a primarily defensive strategy to an aggressive offensive strategy. Lee radically needed supplies and the Anaconda Plan was blocking his supplies.
