The project architect has shown
keen understanding of how to
enhance a difficult space using
brick, with minimal impact on
neighbouring properties.
The judges commented that the
property was ‘well organised,
beautifully detailed and an
exemplary use of brownfield land
to make a new home’. The judges
were impressed by the innovation
on such a demanding site where
the blurring distinction between
the inside and outside of the
property provide the owner with an
extended sense of space, making
the overall project a wonderful
environment in which to live. The
judges said that the client should
be ‘proud’.
The basket weave effect of the
brickwork is something to behold.
The use of shaped brick creates
a tactile quality that softens the
appearance of the building. The
blue bricks blend fantastically with
the pre-existing wall on the plot.
All in all a ‘well presented’ and
‘beautiful house’.

communal area for residents. The
‘delightful brickwork’ is highly
commended and the ‘choice
and use of materials creates a
handsome development with good
size and scale, which is sensitive
to the historic use of the site and
local vernacular’.
The brick is used with faultless
consistency throughout, with
protruding and recessed headers
used to good effect. The judges
enjoyed the lively feel of the
courtyard and the way the
development works to create
attractively light and airy spaces for
residential use.

The choice of brick works to
create a luminary, yet distinctly
private housing development
within London’s Dulwich.
The articulated brick facades
are supplemented by dog-tooth
detailing; a cunning reference to
the traditional eave details seen
on the neighbouring Victorian
terraces. The judges especially
enjoyed this as it ‘provides variety
but maintains the simplicity
and calm which pervades the
project’. Wellbeing is clearly a
consideration of the building, and
the judges prized its seamless
visual connectivity from house
to garden with high ceilings to
maximise the amount of daylight
residents enjoy inside.

BEST LARGE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AWARD

This ‘stellar’ architectural project
has attracted attention through its
diverse building design, and the
use of several types of brick.
The judges were particularly
impressed by the ‘thoughtful
touches to the project, and the
hard work of the architects to
add interest through brick and
its many variations of colour and
detailing’. Communal spaces
are generous and the glazedbrick tunnel ‘creates a means
of wayfinding for residents’. The
building has special significance
as Peabody worked in partnership
with local artist, Rodney Harris,
who produced four brick reliefs
that have been incorporated into
the buildings’ facades. They are
inspired by the estate’s history and
include clothing from WWII, garden
tools and a sink, which hark back
to the communal washing facilities
of the original estate. Additionally,
in the maisonettes, the bricks are
pushed back to form an intricate,
aesthetic pattern.
One judge commented, ‘the
attention to detail in this project is
exceptional. The nod to the site’s
heritage is wonderful in keeping
the past alive through modern
architecture.’

The Greyfriars Quarter development
in Gloucester demonstrated
sensitive use of brick within the
Gloucester city centre conservation
area. The project blends perfectly

use of red bricks and deep precast
brick-faced lintels of contrasting
soldier courses. The judges were
struck by ‘the arrangement of
bonds and details, and the intricacy
this brings to the development as
a whole’.
Brick also plays a pivotal role
in the expansive Wilshere Park
development, which comprises
196 new residences. Each home
takes advantage of new and
existing green space within the
development, designed to be
sensitive to the rural setting.

construction of the school’s
Learning Resource Centre which
as an educational environment
was subject to a myriad of
practical considerations.
As an extension to the existing
library, the subtle relief patterning
of a heritage red blend brick
provides an understated aesthetic,
which gives a distinct character
without detracting from the
overall flow between buildings.
This was articulated by one
judge as ‘blending in easily while
simultaneously bringing its own
unique contribution’.
As well as providing an essential
learning space fit for expanding
young minds, brick has also been
used to refocus the school’s sense
of communal centre, through the
tasteful use of brick archways and
a new brick arcade. The quality of
execution in these examples led to
the judge’s summary: ‘exemplary
brickwork’.

famously conscious of its style,

Vertically coursed standard brick
slips and pistol slips have been
applied to the wall to create a
3D wave pattern that has an
elegance and delicacy which, was
considered ‘striking and attractive’
by the judges. ‘Bold repetitive
forms have been assembled with
neatness and precision and lit with
care to achieve the subtle effects
generated within the surface’.
The 18mm extruded brick slips
and pistol slips represent a
remarkable feat of engineering,
and combine well with other
materials to create a threedimensional sculpture which
is both eye-catching and well
considered.
For a retail interior this sculpture
shows ‘true innovative spirit’ and
contributes significantly to the
luxury feel of the store.

facade was restored and extended
with skilful brick blending. The
white brick used internally was
‘an engineering masterpiece’,
installed with great skill and care
by this year’s worthy winners.

‘The completed building has
brought work of considerable
quality to an area in need of a
visual upgrade.
Working with the fabric of the
existing buildings, additions have
been designed with subtlety and
executed with care. Clever use
has been made of header and
stretcher bond work at lower levels
and both the interior and exterior
brickwork to the three curved
staircases is of high quality. The
manner in which the precast stair
rails have been incorporated into,
and set flush with the inner walls
of the stair is masterly.
The craftsmanship is of a high

BRICK AWARDS 2017
The annual Brick Awards celebrates brick in every aspect of design and
construction. Recognising the excellence of architects, brick contractors,
brick and its manufacturers, the Brick Awards has established a reputation
as one of the industry’s most respected and well attended events. Moving
into its 41st year in 2017, we encourage everyone who is passionate about
improving the built environment to enter their brick projects. It’s free, it’s
easy, and you could be in with a chance to join the Brick Awards hall of fame.

The awards consist of 16 categories specially
designed to celebrate brick in every aspect of design
and craftsmanship. Each year the BDA receives
over 200 entries, which are all considered by our
exceptionally well credentialed judging panel. Please
read all entry requirements before submitting your
project to ensure your entry includes the correct
number of pictures, drawings and all requisite detail.

BRICK AWARDS 2017
THE CATEGORIES
A panel of carefully selected judges chosen
for their expertise will look for entries
that reflect a high level of architectural
quality, good choice of brick, keen sense
of surroundings, evidence of quality
workmanship, strong sustainability
credentials and great use of brick detailing.
Our panel of judges will consider each entry and
compile a shortlist for each category which, will
be announced during the summer. All shortlisted
entries will receive a certificate. The judges will
then visit each shortlisted project and meet again to
deliberate further. The winners in each category will
be announced on the night of the Brick Awards and
will receive a prestigious trophy.
THE HOUSING CATEGORIES
Individual Housing Development Award
Projects need to demonstrate a high level of commitment
to the use of brick and show inspirational design
elements throughout. Either traditional or contemporary,
all single dwelling houses will be considered.
Best Small Housing Development Award
(Up to 25 Units)
New build private or public sector accommodation,
including flats up to 25 units will be considered for
this award. Schemes that are part of a much larger
mixed-use project can also be entered. Projects must
demonstrate a high level of client obligation and fit
within its setting as a housing development.
Best Large Housing Development Award
(Above 25 Units)
New build private or public sector accommodation,
including flats, above 25 units will be considered for
this award. Schemes that are part of a much larger
mixed-use project can also be entered. Projects must
demonstrate a high level of client obligation and fit
within its setting as a housing development.
Best Large House Builder Award
(1000 Units or more)
This award is for large house builders who have used
brick extensively within their developments. Two separate
projects must be submitted to meet entry requirements
and each project must showcase how brick has been
used to create a superb living environment for all
its residents.
Best Urban Regeneration Project
The judges will be looking for schemes that represent
a major re-development of an urban area in which
the choice of brick is used successfully throughout.
Applicants must explain why they chose brick, what
it contributes to the urban environment and how the
development has improved the site. To fully support this
entry applicants must provide before and after photos. A
full site plan of the project must also be submitted.
Best Commercial Building
Buildings entered into this category must be for
commercial use. Offices, retail and leisure schemes,
industrial and religious buildings and mixed-use
developments are all eligible. Projects must use brick
as the main material and show how it contributes to the
building’s success.

Best Public Building
Buildings entered into this category must be for public use.
Private housing will not be considered. To qualify buildings
must have been funded by public or lottery money. PFI
schemes will also be counted. Projects must use brick
as the main material and show how this contributes to its
success.
Best Education Building
Buildings entered into this category must be used in the
educational sector, such as schools and universities.
Student accommodation is not eligible but can be entered
into the housing categories. Projects must use brick as the
main material and show how this contributes to its overall
success.
Best Refurbishment Project
All refurbishment projects in which brick has played a
significant role can be entered. The use of reclaimed brick
is supported within this category. To fully support entries,
applicants must provide both before and after photos.
Best Outdoor Space
Projects entered into this category must use clay bricks or
pavers in any hard landscape design scheme. All outside
spaces are considered including extensions, sculptural
design features, gardens, leisure applications and facilities.
Innovative Use of Brick and Clay Products
To fully support entries applicants must submit a
paragraph that explains specifically what makes the entry
innovative. The judges will then use this to assess the level
of innovation. Any building or civil-engineering project is
eligible. A pioneering structural solution, the clever use of
brick to enhance the sustainability, design and construction,
or an innovation at manufacturing stage will all be
considered.
Specialist Brickwork Contractor of the year
To fully support this entry applicants must enter two
masonry projects. Only one project must use a BDA member
brick. This award will be presented to the brickwork
contractor who shows the most outstanding contribution to
the industry. The judges will take into account craftsmanship
and quality of work and will also review the company’s
attitude to health and safety, apprenticeships and skills.
Applicants must explain why they think they deserve to win.

Craftsmanship Award
Open to all project and building types, sculptures and
specialist techniques. The judges are looking for skill and
the highest standards of craftsmanship. The award will
be presented to the bricklayer on the night and applicants
must supply with their entry, high quality photographs that
illustrate the quality of the craftsmanship.
Worldwide Projects
Projects sited anywhere in the world built with any brick can
be entered into this category. The Brick Awards recognises
the excellence of brick architecture everywhere and will
showcase the best on the night of The Brick Awards.
Additionally, two further awards will be presented on the
night. All shortlisted entries from the above categories
(apart from Worldwide Projects) will be eligible to win.
Please note that you cannot enter projects into these
categories.
Architects’ Choice Award
This award is open to all shortlisted projects (apart from
Worldwide Projects). An online voting system will be
launched so that all registered architects can vote for the
project they think demonstrates the best architectural use of
brick. Multiple votes from a single practice will be counted
as one single vote.
The BDA Supreme Award
The judges will select the project that most impressed the
panel on a broad range of criteria. The final award presented
on the night, this accolade represents the most coveted of
all Brick Awards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND HOW TO ENTER

ENTRY IS FREE
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
In order for your entry to be considered it must contain the following:
A minimum of 5 and maximum of 8 full colour (300dpi) hi-res photos of your particular project.
These photos will inform the first round of judging so please ensure that they best represent
the project you are putting forward. At least one of these photographs must encapsulate the
whole building.
Up to 6 A4 technical drawings. Make sure you include a full site map of the entry. The judges do
look at these drawings so it is crucial to supply as much information as you can.
A written description of the project or scheme including why and how brick was chosen and its
contribution to the overall finish. This should be written within 500 words.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
All projects entered must be sited within
the UK and use a BDA member brick
or paver. This is for all categories apart
from Worldwide Projects.
