STATION ONE – MITOSIS MEMORY
Have you ever played the game “Memory?” In this game, you must
match the illustration of a somatic cell undergoing the cell cycle
to its description of what is occurring during that phase.
But keep an eye out, someone else just might flip over the card you need!
 Flip all cards over (face down) in four rows of six.
 The oldest team member will start the game by flipping over two
cards. A pair of cards can only be “collected” if the picture of the cell
matches the phase description.
 Proceed clockwise around the table with each person turning only
two cards at a time.
 If you collect a pair, your turn continues.
 The team member who collects the most cards wins! Good luck!

-A-

Sister chromatids are pulled apart by
the shortening of the spindle fibers
towards the opposite ends of the cell.
Anaphase.
The cell is carrying out normal
metabolic functions. DNA is replicated
during this phase. Interphase.
-C-
-D-
The cell continues to pull apart. The
nuclear envelope reappears and the
chromosomes uncoil back. Telophase.
The nuclear membrane dissolves.
Chromatin condenses into
chromosomes. The spindle fibers begin
forming from the centrioles. Prophase.
-E-
-F-
The cells completely divide due to the
division of the cytoplasm. Cleavage
furrow develops in animal cells. A cell
plate forms in plant cells. Cytokinesis.
The chromosomes line up along the
equator of the cell. Spindle fibers
attach to the centromere. Metaphase.

STATION TWO –
CELL CYCLE VOCAB CHALLENGE
Split your team into two groups. Each group will be competing
against the other. Work quickly and diligently!
 Flip all cards over (face down) from your team’s packet.
 The youngest team member will say “GO” to begin the game.
 Flip over your cards and place the description phrases next to the
appropriate vocabulary term.
 Once both teams are done, check your answers against the answer
key.
 The team with the most correct pairings wins! Good luck!
Cell Cycle
A series of events in which cells
continuously grow and divide.

6
The stage during which the cell
grows, carries out normal
functions, and replicates the DNA.
P
The stage of the cell cycle during
which the cell’s nucleus and
nuclear material divide.
O
The method by which a cell’s
cytoplasm divides, creating a new
cell.
N
Made up of DNA. Carriers of genetic
information. Made up of two
chromatids held together by a
centromere.
M
Long winding strands of
DNA.
L
Chromatid
7
The two structures which are held
together by a centromere to form a
chromosome.
K
Cyclin
Protein which binds to enzymes
and regulates the cell cycle.

J
Cleavage Furrow
Develops during cytokinesis of an
animal cell due to the pinching in
9
of the cell membrane.
Cell Plate
Develops during cytokinesis
between plant cells.

Meiosis
16
Crossing Over
17
D
Haploid cells produced by meiosis.
Contain 23 chromosomes in human
cells.

Necessary for sexual reproduction.
Process which results in the
production of gametes.

Genetic information is exchanged
between homologous chromosomes.

STATION THREE –
COMPARE AND COMPETE
You are on your own for this challenge. Each team member is
competing individually.
 Flip all cards over from your team’s packet. Each person will need a
copy of the Mitosis vs. Meiosis Venn diagram.
 The team member whose birthday is closest to today will say “GO”
to begin the game.
 Flip over your cards and place the description phrases in the
appropriate location on your venn diagram.
 Once both teams are done, check your answers against the answer
key.
 The team with the most correct pairings wins! Good luck!
MITOSIS
MEIOSIS
Involves only one cell division
Results in two daughter cells
Involves two cell divisions
Results in four daughter cells
Chromosome number reduced
from 2n to n
Produces new cells
Parent cell chromosome number
maintained
DNA replicates only once
Crossing over takes place
Necessary for sexual reproduction
Results in the formation of
gametes
Daughter cells genetically
different
Results in the multiplication of
somatic cells
Daughter cells genetically
identical
Asexual reproduction of cells
Daughter cells are haploid
Occurs in reproductive organs
Daughter cells are diploid
Occurs in plants and animals

STATION FOUR – OH MY (OSIS)!
You and a partner will work together to use a variety of materials
in order to illustrate the stages of meiosis i and meiosis ii.
 Review the materials available to you for cell-building.
 First, you will need to determine which materials you will use to
represent the following: cell, nucleus, chromosome, spindle fiber,
centriole.
 Start by building a cell which illustrates Prophase I of Meiosis I.
(Use the pictures as a guide)
 Have your teacher check each stage before you move on to the next
one.
 The final stage you and your partner should have checked off is
Telophase II of Meiosis II (where you should have four haploid
daughter cells!).
STATION FIVE – IT’S CELLTASTIC!
You may work together on the crossword, but you are responsible
for completing your own sheet.
 Turn to the crossword puzzle on the back of your study guide.
 Work with your partners to figure out and fill in the answers of your
crossword puzzle. Keep in mind, this puzzle contains information for
both Mitosis and Meiosis.
 If you finish early at ANY other station, you may continue working on
your crossword puzzle.
 Hint hint: this will be a very helpful study tool for Friday’s test!
 Finally, have your teacher check your crossword puzzle against her
key.
STATION SIX – A RADICAL REVIEW!
You may work together on the study guide, but you are responsible
for completing your own sheet. You will need a separate sheet of
paper for this station.
 Turn to the study guide you were given in class.
 Work with your partners to review the information laid out in the
study guide.
 Use the study guide as a checklist. Check off the terms and/or items
you know well and keep a separate sheet of paper with information
you need to further review.
 Hint hint: this will be a very helpful study tool for Friday’s test!
