Re-vegetation and Succession Field Investigation Repopulation of Mt Rainier debris flows Ecological succession • A fundamental concept in ecology • Refers to more-or-less predictable and orderly change in the composition or structure of an ecological community. • Succession may be initiated either by formation of new, unoccupied habitat or by some form of disturbance of an existing community. Climate Change As temperatures at Mount Rainier warm, glaciers like the Nisqually Glacier retreat. Retreating glaciers uncover sediments that provide materials for debris flows. Debris flow cause disturbance and lead to ecological succession.
