Parts of a Patent
A Patent Title
B Patent Number

E Inventor names – Inventors are always people never companies or organizations.
F Assignee names (if applicable) – An assignee can be a person, company or
organization. When working for an employer you are the inventor and
the employer is the assignee.
G US Class / subclass number – This number can change as the classification
scheme changes. Don’t rely on what is written on the patent but rather
what is listed in the USPTO database. The bold number is the primary or
original class number and the major descriptor of the patent. Numbers in
regular type are other areas in which you should look to do an exhaustive
search. There are roughly 450 classes and 150,000 subclasses.
H References cited – These can be patents, articles, or books. These cited references
can be searched by the USPTO database.
I Abstract – A short technical summary of the patent.
J Description: Background & How to make it – The description is sufficient for
someone skilled in the field to reproduce it.
K Claims – This is the part of the patent that forms the legal basis for protection.
L Drawings (if applicable)
M Amino acid & nucleotide sequences (if applicable)
