'Science meets Society' symposium On Thursday 9th October Sustainable Society, in collaboration with Zorg Innovatie Forum, organised a 'Science meets Society' symposium about the challenges and changes in healthcare. During a day filling programme, in which several professionals and academics held talks about their findings and ideas, people were encouraged to look for answers and share their visons. The key subject was the inclusion of society into current institutional structures. Examples of bottom up initiatives were presented and the challenges that these bring about were addressed. During a debate and several dialogues on certain topics, it became clear that change is happening all around us while raising many important societal questions. As seen from the many successful examples however there is good hope that challenges can be overcome. The symposium brought about fruitful ground for cooperation and managed to bring people from different perspectives together to share their ideas. Read more Groningen chairs advisory group on nontechnological energy research During the EU Sustainable Energy Week in June, the University of Groningen was encouraged and inspired by the European Commission to create an advisory group on nontechnological research. We have taken up the challenge and with professor Linda Steg as chair of the group, we are collaborating with other European researchers to produce a vision paper that will advise the European Commission on current sociological and economic bottlenecks in the energy transition. Those fields have long been neglected, but are quickly rising in importance, as policymakers realize that technological advances should be supported and accepted by its intended users. Currently, there is insufficient knowledge on how to motivate users to make decisions that contribute to sustainability and a need for economic models that are able to cope with the fast changing and vastly different energy system of the future. To be continued! Upcoming event: 30 October Expertmeeting 'Anti Social Behaviour' On October 30, Sustainable Society organizes together with Michel Vols an expertmeeting about 'Anti Social Behaviour'. During this expertmeeting an interdisciplinary group of scientists from the University of Groningen and professionals from the field together examine the possible social consequences of anti social behaviour. They also discuss what elements may be implemented for a solutionoriented approach.
