Asia Asia is the largest of the 7 continents. Most people in Asia are Chinese, Japanese, Arab or Indian and they live in 1 of the 48 countries within Asia. The main religions include Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity. The largest cities of Asia are Tokyo, Seoul, Jakarta, Dehli, Mumbai, Manila, and Shanghai. Asia is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific, Artic, and Indian oceans. The land of Asia is divided into six regions. These six regions are North Asia, Central Asia, Southwest Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. China is the largest country in East Asia and has the most people of any country in the world. To stop over population, most families are only allowed to have one child. There are many different languages spoken in China. The main languages spoken are Mandarin, Yue, Wu, Minbei, Minnan, Xiang, Gan, and Hakka. Most of Southwest Asia is desert and the Himalaya mountains. The largest country in South Asia is India. Over one billion people live in India. This is almost one-fourth of the world’s population! Many different languages are spoken in India. The most common languages heard are Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, and Urdu. Many tourists from all over the world come to India to tour the famous Taj Mahal mausoleum. One of the most fascinating places to visit is the Dead Sea. It’s located at the lowest point on earth. The Dead Sea is 417 meters below sea level. It’s the world’s saltiest body of water. It’s so salty that most living things cannot survive in it. Only bacteria and fungi can survive the salty waters of the Dead Sea. People actually stay afloat in the Dead Sea! Even the rocks along the seashore are saltcovered. Shepherds walking along the shoreline made history when they discovered ancient biblical writings rolled inside of glass bottles. These became known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Asian Money There are over 50 different currencies used in Asia, including the US and Hong Kong dollar, the Euro, Indian rupee and Iraqi dinar. Which is the longest river in Asia? The fourth longest river in the world runs through China. It is the Yangtze River which is also home to the Giant Panda. What mountains are in Asia? Most of Southwest Asia is desert and made up of many mountain chains including The Himalaya Mountains. The tallest mountain in this area is Mount Everest. It’s part of the Himalaya Mountains chain. Thousands of people have climbed Mount Everest. This is a dangerous climb at 29,029 feet! The first person to climb to the top of Mount Everest was Edmund Hillary from New Zealand. Physical Features The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest which is in the Himalayan mountain range. The Himalayas are spread across five countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, and Pakistan. The mountain range is 2,400 kilometres long. The rainforests in southeast Asia are the oldest rainforests in the world, dating back to around 70 million years ago. Lots of plants and animals can be found there. Humidity is always high in the rainforests. Steppe is dry, flat grassland with no trees. Much of Central Asia’s landscape is steppe. Steppes are semi-arid, meaning they receive 25 to 50 centimeters (10-20 inches) of rain each year. This is enough rain to support short grasses, but not enough for tall grasses or trees to grow. Human Features China is most known for The Great Wall of China. It is the largest man-made structure 5,500 miles long. Did you know that the Great Wall of China can be seen from space? The rice terraces in the Philippines were build two thousand years ago. Farmers wanted to grow rice, but were unable to grow it on the mountainsides. By creating these large ‘steps’, farmers could grow rice on the flat land on each step or terrace. The Taj Mahal was built in India by an emperor in memory of his wife. The walls are decorated with patterns, writing and gem stones. Thousands of people go to see the Mahal every year. What is the climate like in the different regions in Asia? The southern sections of Asia are warm to cold, while far north eastern areas such as Siberia are very cold. The highest temperature recorded in Asia was 54.0 °C (129.2 °F) at Tirat Zvi, Israel on June 21, 1942. North Asia This part of Asia is also known as Siberia. It’s extremely cold with snow and ice covering it all year round, resulting in below freezing temperatures. Siberia is the largest land area of Asia. It is bigger than the country of Canada! This northern region has the most land but the fewest people. Northern Asia is home to the famous Siberian Tiger and Husky dogs. Despite the extreme cold, the area is a leading world producer of oil, diamonds, gold, and timber. East Asia is the region with the most people. East Asia has a temperate climate., meaning it is sometimes colder and sometimes warmer. East Asia does not have extremes of temperatures. Central Asia is where the countries of the former Soviet Republic were located. Central Asia is made up of deserts, mountains, and plateaus. This makes the area have an extreme range of temperatures, from freezing cold to humid dry heat. Southwest Asia is also called The Middle East. The Middle East is known as the “Crossroads of the World” because it is where the three continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe come together. Southeast Asia has large rice farms. This region gets a lot of rain which is needed for growing rice. What animals live in Asia? Leopard Seal Giant Pandas live in the mountains in China, a country in the continent of Asia. They are mostly herbivores, eating bamboo which is a woody plant, although sometimes they eat eggs or small animals. They have thick woolly fur to keep them warm in the cold Giant Panda mountains. Pandas are an endangered species as their natural habitat is being destroyed by farmers, foresters and other animals grazing on the land. Orang-utans live on the island of Sumatra, a country in Asia. They are carnivores, eating fruit, bird’s eggs and insects. They are clever animals, using sticks to Orang-utan get honey from bee’s nests. Like the panda, orang-utans are an endangered species. Foresters are cutting down the palm trees in the forests where they live to make palm oil. Asian elephants have trunks made of muscle which they use for feeding, watering, touching, washing and gripping. They live in the jungles in the mountainous parts of India, Indo-China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia & Southern China, in the continent of Asia. Asian elephants are herbivores, eating lots plants. They like to bath, using their Asian Elephant trunks as snorkels. Asian elephants are an endangered species as pandas and orang-utans, the trees where they live and eat are being cut down. Male peafowl are called peacocks and females are called peahens. Peacocks have bright blue and green feathers. They eat berries, grains and sometimes small snakes and lizards.
