Injuries are a natural part of athletic participation. While certain sports obviously have a much
higher injury risk factor than others, injuries will and do occur in all sports from golf and tennis
to football and wrestling. While most injuries are considered mild in nature, there is the
occasional serious injury which can result in a significant loss of participation and even the
possibility of surgery.
Clay Middle School has contracted with St. Vincent Sports Performance to provide one parttime athletic trainer to care for the majority of athletic injury needs here at school on a daily
basis. What follows is some general information regarding the various services available.
Athletic Trainers: Athletic trainers are allied health professionals who specialize in the
prevention, evaluation, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and related conditions. She is
available each school day beginning approximately thirty minutes before the end of the school
day and will be on campus for all in-season practice sessions and home athletic events.
Availability on Saturdays and vacation days will vary, depending on what is scheduled. Please
don’t hesitate to contact Renee Miller with any questions you might have. All athletic injuries
should be seen by Renee, if possible. Any time an athlete goes to a doctor for anything during
regular season sports, a clearance note must be on file with school and athletic trainer before
returning to athletics
Renee Miller can be contacted via phone or email and will contact parents in the case of an
emergency or athletic injury update.

Team Physician: While Clay middle school does not have one specific team physician, Dr. Todd
Arnold is team physician for Carmel High School. Dr. Arnold along with other fully qualified
sports medicine physicians are available at the St. Vincent Sports Performance offices in the
Clay Terrace shopping mall. The primary scheduling number for all SVSP physicians is 317-4155795.
Injury Check: If your athlete is complaining of an injury they can be seen by Renee after school
before practice. If/when an injury occurs during practice or game athlete will be evaluated and
parents will be informed.
Walk-In Clinic: St. Vincent Sports Performance offers walk-in clinic hours at all of its locations
each weekday from 8:00-10:00AM. No appointment is necessary. This clinic is for new injuries
only. For example, an athlete injures his/her ankle at a game the night before and you are
advised to get an x-ray the next day, this is an easy option.
ImPACT Testing: In conjunction with St. Vincent Sports Performance, Clay requires all athletes
in to take the on-line ImPACT test to provide what is referred to as a baseline score to be used
in the event a concussion does occur while participating in sports. This test is routinely taken at
the beginning of each season. Renee will administer baseline test and only a physician can
administer and read post-injury test. If a copy of the baseline is needed for an outside
physician the parent can notify Renee via email and a copy will be sent.
Concussions: Unfortunately, concussions are a fairly common injury in athletics. We take
concussions very seriously and treat them accordingly. If any athlete shows any signs of
concussion, they should first be seen by the athletic trainer on site and evaluated. If the
athletic trainer determines that a concussion has occurred, they will inform the parents of the
athlete about the injury and provide them with the appropriate care information. It is state law
in Indiana that any athlete who has sustained a possible concussion must be evaluated by a
physician before being allowed to return to any physical activity. When released, the athlete
will then need to complete a “Return to Play” protocol under the supervision of one of the
athletic trainers. This process is typically a five (5) day process, once released by a physician.
