Spelling Activities for Homework 1. Chant, Clap, Write Chant and clap the letters of each of your spelling words. Next, write each letter as you chant it. (Instead of chanting you can sing, swing, stomp or something else just like we do in school with the word wall words.) Write your words 3 times each. 2. Rainbow Words Write your spelling words with a pen, pencil or crayon. Trace over the word at least 3 times. Use a different color each time. Do this for each of your words. 3. Ransom Words Look through magazines and newspapers to find the letters that make each of your spelling words. Glue them together to make your spelling words. 4. Look/Say/Cover/Write/Check Look at your word. Say your word. Cover your word. Try to write your word from memory. Check to see if you spelled it right. Do this 2 times for each of your spelling words. 5. Word Hunt See how many times you can find your spelling words in a book or around the house. 6. Magnetic Letters If you have magnetic letters at home, use them to spell out each word. Scramble the word and try to spell it again. Spell and scramble each word on your list. 7. Rhyming Words Write words that rhyme with your words. These words do not have to have the same spelling pattern as each of your words. (Examples: ―me‖, flea, see tree, ski, tea, he) 8. Hidden words For each spelling word, find any hidden words. Write them down. e.g., ―that‖ – at, hat 9. Word Chunks Find the word chunk in your word (if there is one). If you can spell that word, what other words can you spell—using that same letter pattern? Write them down. Do this for each of your spelling words. e.g., ―bat‖ – cat, hat, sat, acrobat 10. Word Frames Draw a letter frame around each letter in your word. Pay attention to the tall letters, short letters and letters with tails. 11. Macaroni Spelling Spell the words with alphabet macaroni or cereal. 12. Word Scramble On a piece of paper scramble the words for your child and have him/her unscramble the words. Or go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a double puzzle with your child’s spelling words. Print it out and he/she can unscramble the spelling words. 13. Acrostic Spelling Write your spelling words in one column. On the lines next to them, write words that start with each letter in your spelling word. For example: shoe = sale, hat, old, end 14. Word Building Take the root word of your spelling word and add prefixes and/or suffixes to the word to build a new word. For example: write pre-write, writing, writer, writes, rewrite, overwrite 15. Word Search On a piece of paper create a word search for your child and have him/her find the words. Or go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a hidden message word search or word search puzzle with your child’s spelling words. Print it out and he/she can complete the word search. 16. Spelling - Word Bingo Give your child a 5 x 5 grid containing 25 boxes. Have your child write the letters of the alphabet in random order in the 25 squares. Obviously one letter will have to be left out. Children should choose the least-used letter to eliminate. Say a spelling word, and have students write the word on a lined piece of paper. Have them cover up each letter of the word on their Bingo grid. He/she has Bingo when all letters in one row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally have been covered up. 17. Cross Word Puzzle Go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a Criss-Cross puzzle with your child’s spelling words. You will also need to enter in a clue for each word.
