Spelling Activities for Homework
1. Chant, Clap, Write
Chant and clap the letters of each of your spelling words. Next, write each letter
as you chant it. (Instead of chanting you can sing, swing, stomp or something else
just like we do in school with the word wall words.) Write your words 3 times
each.
2.
Rainbow Words
Write your spelling words with a pen, pencil or crayon. Trace over the word at
least 3 times. Use a different color each time. Do this for each of your words.
3.
Ransom Words
Look through magazines and newspapers to find the letters that make each of your
spelling words. Glue them together to make your spelling words.
4.
Look/Say/Cover/Write/Check
Look at your word. Say your word. Cover your word. Try to write your word from
memory. Check to see if you spelled it right. Do this 2 times for each of your
spelling words.
5.
Word Hunt
See how many times you can find your spelling words in a book or around the house.
6.
Magnetic Letters
If you have magnetic letters at home, use them to spell out each word. Scramble
the word and try to spell it again. Spell and scramble each word on your list.
7.
Rhyming Words
Write words that rhyme with your words. These words do not have to have the
same spelling pattern as each of your words. (Examples: ―me‖, flea, see tree, ski,
tea, he)
8.
Hidden words
For each spelling word, find any hidden words. Write them down.
e.g., ―that‖ – at, hat
9.
Word Chunks
Find the word chunk in your word (if there is one). If you can spell that word, what
other words can you spell—using that same letter pattern? Write them down. Do
this for each of your spelling words.
e.g., ―bat‖ – cat, hat, sat, acrobat
10. Word Frames
Draw a letter frame around each letter in your word. Pay attention to the tall
letters, short letters and letters with tails.
11.
Macaroni Spelling
Spell the words with alphabet macaroni or cereal.
12.
Word Scramble
On a piece of paper scramble the words for your child and have him/her unscramble
the words. Or go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a double
puzzle with your child’s spelling words. Print it out and he/she can unscramble the
spelling words.
13.
Acrostic Spelling
Write your spelling words in one column. On the lines next to them, write words
that start with each letter in your spelling word.
For example: shoe = sale, hat, old, end
14.
Word Building
Take the root word of your spelling word and add prefixes and/or suffixes to the
word to build a new word. For example: write  pre-write, writing, writer, writes,
rewrite, overwrite
15. Word Search
On a piece of paper create a word search for your child and have him/her find the
words. Or go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a hidden
message word search or word search puzzle with your child’s spelling words. Print
it out and he/she can complete the word search.
16. Spelling - Word Bingo
Give your child a 5 x 5 grid containing 25 boxes. Have your child write the letters
of the alphabet in random order in the 25 squares. Obviously one letter will have
to be left out. Children should choose the least-used letter to eliminate. Say a
spelling word, and have students write the word on a lined piece of paper. Have
them cover up each letter of the word on their Bingo grid. He/she has Bingo when
all letters in one row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally have been covered up.
17. Cross Word Puzzle
Go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ and create a Criss-Cross puzzle
with your child’s spelling words. You will also need to enter in a clue for each word.
Print it out and he/she will be able to complete the Cross Word puzzle.
