Kipling’s reputation became heated after
he published the story, “The White Man
burden”
 It created social tension and an
unfamiliar environments for Critics and
the common folk alike


The poem is about how white people often take
the burden of telling other countries and
peoples what to do
That Means…

White people continually have a tendency to
dictate, and encourage the cultural
development of people from other ethnic and
cultural backgrounds. Interpreted as racist, or
taken as a metaphor for a condescending view
of non-Western national culture and economic
traditions

was habitually a Satirical, or
not serious writer.
 Ergo,
"The White Man's Burden" is in
fact meant to parody imperialist
attitudes

American was shocked, and took this piece
of literature as a direct slap in the face and
adversarial position to the way things
should, and have always been done.

The black mans burden was even
published after this poem in direct contrast
to what Kipling had to say, by AfricanAmerican clergyman and editor H. T.
Johnson and published in April 1899
