Context
 National Health Plan 2011-2016 perspectives the
development of new technologies in the health area
as a strategic axis to develop.
 On the other hand, internet is considered a
privileged way of communicating and obtaining
useful information to interact with people who
needs health care (ACS, 2009).
 Citizens are increasingly requested to participate in
in healthcare.
2
Study purpose
 To develop and validate an interactive tool that
provides information tailored to the needs of dependent
patients’ family caregivers, promoting their autonomy.
3
Matherials and Methods
 Information content for interactive educational tool
came from different sources:
 Semi-structured interviews
 Expert group
 Literature review
4
Matherials and Methods
 Semi-structured interview with family caregivers in an
urban and rural.
 Categories overlapping to those described in the
literature. Highlights the need to acquire knowledge
and instrumental skills
 Knowledge, competence, instrumental support
5
Matherials and Methods
 Semi-structured interviews with nurses in a hospital
setting and health center.
 Identify family caregivers in the need to acquire
knowledge, develop skills in instrumental and know
the resources (materials and community).
6
Matherials and Methods
 Assessment by a Expert group composed of
specialists in the subject areas studied, consisting on:
Nurses with experience in caring for dependent people;
Experts in the field of health information technology;
Teachers in the area of adult health and the elderly.
7
Matherials and Methods
 Literature review about caregivers needs and
education technology
 The literature was identified by combining
keywords: caregivers, selfcare, nursing.
8
Matherials and Methods
 Interactive design tool according to the process of
prototyping (Pressman, 2006).
The content will include the domains that emerged
from the content analysis of the narratives of
participants as well as the opinion of an expert
group.
 Support of the Institute of Engineering – Polytechnic
of Porto (ISEP)- master`s degree student
9
Matherials and Methods
 Building of this interactive tool have three areas:
 Knowledge
 Instrumental
 Resources
In order to provide information tailored to the needs of
family caregivers to promote their mastery.
10
Matherials and Methods
Contents were built focusing on basic needs of caregivers lives
allowing to overcome difficulties in caring of dependent person
The interactive educational tool was supported by video
demonstrating procedures and audio documents
 Videos were built and carried out taking into account the most
frequent types of care developed by family caregivers ,
attempting to meet the needs of carers for dependent persons.
 Some videos are performed by family caregivers who already
provide care for a dependent person.
11
Development of interactive tool
 The interactive tool was developed using Adobe
Captivate 6 technology of Adobe Learning Suite,
which is often used for creating this kind of
interactive and educational applications, since it
allows for easy reuse and introducing the feature in
different Web pages.
 Responsibility of School of Engineering –
Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP)- master`s degree student
12
Development of interactive tool
 Caregiver Site provides support through some
mechanisms:
 Home page
 Information Areas
 Gallery
 Contacts
 Educacional Links

 Home page
Where it made a small presentation on the interactive
tool.
 Information Area
The information area is divided into 3 subjects: feeding
through a nasogastric tube, Positioning and Transferring
the dependent person.
Each issue have slide, vídeo and audio documents
demonstrating procedures showing how to be
performed by their users.
16
 Gallery
 Gallery is divided by three main information areas and
each user click on the topic they want to see.
Within each of these themes, images are subdivided into:
 Devices - Here caregivers may find all the equipment
they need to perform the procedures related to the
information area chosen by them;
 Image Procedures - in this area carers may find
pictures relating to implementing procedures about
the chosen subject.
17
 Contacts
 Provides contacting the Nursing School of Porto
(ESEP) since any question that may arise
concerning procedures should be sent to
researcher.
 Still contain ISEP contacts and stakeholders in the
present study.
18
 Educacional Links
 Educacional information that may be useful
for consultation with caregivers.
 Links of reputable web sites that may be useful
to caregivers.
19
Innovative element
 We develop a trusted and user-friendly site. The
major innovative element will be the platform
interactivity’ conception meeting with users needs,
helping them in their decision making and allowing
family caregivers to decide which information they
want to know and learn about.
20
Conclusion
 We believe the development of this project will
lead to a better knowledge on the contribution of
educational technologies to the development of
skills of family caregivers
