Do Now
1. Sweat through the skin, exhaling carbon dioxide, urination,
removal of solid waste
2. The bladder expands like a balloon as it fills up with urine.
Whenever it expands too big, signals are sent to your brain that
makes you feel uncomfortable and need to use the restroom!
3. Blood in the circulatory system passes through the kidney, where
waste is filtered out by the urinary system and removed from the
body
4. The respiratory system inhales oxygen and the blood in the
circulatory system transports it throughout the body for the cells
to use
5. Chloroplast performs photosynthesis and the cell wall provides
structure
Pathogens
 Pathogens are microbes (microscopic living organisms)
that can cause infections and harm the body
 There are four types:
1) Bacteria
2) Viruses
3) Fungi
4) Parasites
Bacteria
• Prokaryotic microorganisms
• Most are harmless because of the
body’s immune system; some are
beneficial
• Others are pathogenic and cause
diseases
Viruses!
Viruses are much smaller than bacteria. They need to be inside
a cell to survive
In other words they need a host cell. They get inside the cell
and hijack its function.
How Viruses Work
• Viruses attach
themselves to the
cell and insert their
own DNA that causes
the DNA of that cell
to change.
• This hijacking of
body cells can cause
harm to humans
When we get sick…
When we become sick, the cells that are
being affected by the
Virus or bacteria have changed
The job of the immune system is to find
the invader and destroy it.
The Immune System
 The immune system
protects cells from
microscopic invaders.
 Once you die, the immune
system dies as well, and
these invaders move in!
 Within weeks, they
completely dismantle your
body, leaving only a
skeleton
 So, the immune system is
important!
The Fighters!
 White blood cells (from the
circulatory system) fight
diseases & invaders!
 TURN & TALK: How do the
immune and circulatory
systems work together?
Review – Hands Down
????????
 What is a pathogen?
ANSWER
 Pathogens are microbes that can cause infections and
harm the body
 There are four types:
1) Bacteria
2) Viruses
3) Fungi
4) Parasites
??????????
 What do viruses require for survival?
ANSWER
 A host cell to invade and live inside of
???????
 What is the function of the immune system?
ANSWER
 The immune system protects cells from microscopic
invaders
 It keeps you from getting sick!
????????
 What would happen if you didn’t have an immune
system?
ANSWER
 The same thing that happens when you die!
 Once you die, the immune system dies as well, and
pathogenic invaders move in!
 Within weeks, they completely dismantle your body,
leaving only a skeleton
 So, the immune system is important!
The Nervous system
SWBAT describe how the nervous system affects
the body and helps maintain homeostasis
The Nervous system
SWBAT describe how the nervous system affects the
body and helps maintain homeostasis
The Nervous System
• The nervous system is our
body’s method for
communicating information
about what we feel, think, &
how we move
• The nervous system
controls body processes by
using electrical impulses via
a network of nerves.
• Electrical impulses are sent
to and from the brain, which
tells the body what to do
The nervous system
• We have two highways of information:
1. Messages going to the brain (this soup is hot on my tongue)
2. Messages leaving the brain (you should blow on it!)
How do these messages
reach the brain?
• Neurons are specialized nerve cells that uses electrical
energy to communicate information through the brain
and body
Autonomic vs. Somatic
The autonomic nervous system is another
word for automatic. We dont think about
these functions - our nerves just make
them happen.
Somatic includes the things we control, like
movement.
