1. I can identify the parts
of a small engine.
2. I can explain each part’s
function(s).
Group 2: Crankshaft Components
The crankshaft turns the pistons up
& down in a circular motion, just like
a crank on a jack-in-the-box does.
crankshaft
This entire
part is
called the
crankshaft.
• crank + shaft
– crank = arm
– shaft = tubular piece of
metal
• It takes the power
produced by the
pistons & puts it into
rotational power.
From there it powers
the blade on a mower.
• If this part doesn’t
work, then the blade
won’t spin.
crankshaft counter weights
• counter + weights
– counter = a lot of
spinning is going on so
need something to
counter, or balance, it
out
– weights = the heaviness
of weights help balance
spinning
• These weights even out
the piston’s movement
so it spins evenly.
They help the engine
run smoothly.
magneto journal
• magneto + journal
– magneto = magnet
– journal = 1 section
of crankshaft; 3
total
• It is the part that
attached to the
flywheel. (FYI:
Flywheel & magneto are
outside engine, & they
determine when the engine
fires.)
PTO journal
• power take-off +
journal
– power take-off =
taking power from one
place & giving it to
another place
– journal = 1 section of
crankshaft; 3 total
• It spins the part
that the engine is
trying to spin (blade,
wheel, driveshaft).
crankpin journal
• Crank + pin
– crank = arm
– pin = hold things
together (FYI: Even
though there is no pin on
this piece, it works with
another piece that does
use a pin.)
• This transfers the
force of the piston
& connecting rod
into a rotational
force/power.
Animation
• Take a look at how these parts work
together in this video.
