Self control- a person’s ability to use responsibility to over-ride emotions. Relationship-a bond or connection you have with other people. Harassment- persistently annoying others. Clique- a small circle of friends, usually with similar backgrounds or tastes, who exclude people viewed as outsiders. Abstinence- doing without Intimacy- a closeness between two people that develops over time. Tolerance- the ability to accept others’ differences Dysuria- pain or burning upon urination Asymptomatic-people who are infected show no symptoms or the infections produce mild symptoms that disappear. Platonic friendship-a friendship with opposite gender where there is affection Hormones- chemical substances that help regulate many of your body’s functions. REAL LIFE ISSUES • Heather’s friend Lisa is the kind of person who always wants to have her own way. When they go out together, Lisa decides where they’ll go and what they’ll do. If Heather offers a suggestion, Lisa dismisses it. Heather wants to stay friends with Lisa, but she is tired of being pushed around. People adopt this style to avoid conflict. STYLES OF COMMUNICATION Assertive • Assertive- expressing your views clearly and respectfully. This involves standing up for your rights and beliefs while also respecting those of others. Those that adopt this are trying to find the best solution to the problem. WAYS TO COMMUNICATE SPEAKING SKILLS• “You” messages • Why can’t you show up on time? • You never listen to what I say • You always ignore me when your other friends are around. • “I” messages • I really don’t like waiting-it makes me feel like you don’t care. • I feel like my suggestions are not being taken seriously. LISTENING SKILLS • ACTIVE LISTENING, paying close attention to what someone is saying and communicate. • Practice active listening • Don’t interrupt. Give your full attention. • Show interest. Eye contact, “I see”, “go on”, “I understand” • Restate what you hear. Summarize the speaker’s words. • Ask questions. Help clarify the conversation. • Show empathy. Do not ignore the speaker’s attitude or non verbal actions.
