 West Nile virus was first identified in 1937 in Uganda in eastern Africa. It was first
discovered in the United States in the summer of 1999 in New York. Since then, the
virus has spread throughout the United States. West Nile virus (WNV) is a
potentially serious illness. West Nile Virus is commonly found in Africa, West Asia,
and the Middle East. Experts believe WNV is established as a seasonal epidemic in
North America that flares up in the summer and continues into the fall. Most often,
WNV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected
when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread WNV to
humans and other animals when they bite. WNV is not spread through casual
contact such as touching (CDC, 2012).
