• On your paper respond to any of the following questions. You need to
continue to write for the whole time provided.
• What do you think makes a good speech? What qualities should a speech
have?
• When have you heard a speech that moved you, motivated you, or inspired
you? What was it about the speech that 'got' to you?
• What role does language and the spoken word play in a society? What
responsibility does a leader have in using speeches?
Listen to some of the 20th century's greatest speeches
WHAT MAKES THESE SPEECHES
GREAT?
THREE ASPECTS WE 'RE GOING TO
ANALYZE IN SPEECHES
• Examine how the speaker develops the argument (logos,
ethos, pathos), and what is the effect?
• Look at the rhetorical devices being used, and what are the
effects?
• Determine how the speaker's leadership abilities are
displayed in the speech, and what is the effect?
DEVELOPING THE
ARGUMENT
HOW IS AN ARGUMENT DEVELOPED
AND WHAT IS A RHETORICAL TRIANGLE?
According to Aristotle
all sides
of the triangle need to
be equal for the
speaker's message to
be effective
LET'S SEE HOW LOGOS, ETHOS
AND PATHOS ARE USED...
WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE
ARGUMENT?
Questions to ask:
• What is the speakers main point or thesis?
• How did the speaker effectively and logically lay out the argument?
• How has the speaker's credibility been established?
• How has the audience's emotions been appealed to?
• What evidence has been used to back up the speaker's opinion?

LET'S SEE HOW RHETORICAL DEVICES ARE USED...
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF
RHETORICAL DEVICES?
Questions to ask:
• How is the message enhanced?
• Is a point emphasized or driven home?
• Is the message memorable?
• Do the devices used make the message more pleasurable to listen to?
Rhetorical devices are the
color in a speech
LEADERSHIP ABLILITIES
ARE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES
EVIDENT IN THE SPEAKER?
The purpose of any speech is to motivate the audience in some way.
Leaders are able to use speeches to inspire, encourage, motivate, and
persuade.
To analyze a speaker's leadership qualities ask these questions:
• Do I believe what the speaker is saying? Why?
• How did the speaker move me?
• What do I want to do after listening?
• How do I feel about the speaker and the message?
• What am I going to do moving forward?
LET'S LISTEN TO SOME
MOTIVATIONAL SPEECHES
NOW LET'S PUT OUR KNOWLEDGE
TO WORK
• King George VI just who is he?
LET'S LISTEN TO GEORGE
