 How are Communism, Capitalism and Socialism
different as Economic Systems?
Roots of the Cold War
 During WWI and WWII, the US and USSR are allies.
 Roosevelt and Stalin work together to defeat Hitler.
 However, US and other Western nations aided Czar
during the Russian Revolution
 Don’t want communism
 1944 Roosevelt developed slogan : “the war on fascism
ends; the war on capitalism begins.”
A little about Joseph Stalin
 Leader of Soviet Union from 1922 – 1952
 Communist to the core and saw WWII as his
opportunity to spread it.
 Gulag work camps to eliminate opponents
 Stalled fighting Hitler in Poland so it
would be easier for him to put communist
leaders in charge later.
 Soviet forces eliminated Nazis but also
Nazi resisters who wanted old leadership
 Purged Jews in order to gain friends in
Middle East
 Paranoid and often killed his own soldiers
Yalta Conference – Feb. 1945

defend itself from communism
 Policy of containment
 Called for large military in peace time
 Led to the formation of the CIA
