Classifying Rocks
Opening Question
Write your answer to the following question in
your notes:
• What do you think rocks are made of? Explain.
5.1 Classifying Rocks
Learning Targets
I can use characteristics to identify rocks.
I can identify the three main groups of rocks.
5.1 Classifying Rocks
Mineral Composition and Color
A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid, that
has a crystal structure and a definite chemical
composition.
A rock is made of mixtures of minerals and other
materials.
Some rocks contain only a single mineral.
Others contain several different minerals.
5.1 Classifying Rocks
Target: I can use characteristics to identify rocks.
Two characteristics are:
1 Grain: size, shape, pattern (page 146)
2 Texture : smooth, glassy, chalky
.
Texture is described by the rocks grain size,
pattern, and shape
5.1 Classifying Rocks
Target: I can identify the 3 main groups of rocks
1. Igneous rocks (section 5.2 page 148)
From the cooling of molten rock

I can identify the 3 main groups of rocks
2. Sedimentary rocks (section 5.3 page 152)
When layers of debris build up, are compressed
and squeezed over time

3. Metamorphic rocks (section 5.5 page 160)
When existing rock is changed by heat and
pressure

Mineral Composition and Color
Most of the Earth’s crust is made up of Granite
(light color, high silica, less dense)
.
Most of the Earth’s ocean floor is made up of
Basalt (dark color, low silica, very dense)
