8 Levels of
Organization
Living organisms are divided into eight levels of
organization in order for scientists to study
problems on several different levels
This slideshow displays the levels of organization
from smallest to largest.
Atom
Fundamental units of matter.
Molecule
Combinations of atoms in specific
arrangements.
Ex. proteins, carbohydrates, DNA, water
Organelle
Structures found in cells with specific
functions.
Ex. nucleus, mitochondria, golgi body
Cell
The
smallest unit of living things.
Ex. Single celled organisms like bacteria
or
Types of cells within multicellular organisms
i.e. liver cells, nerve cells, white blood cells
Tissue
Clusters of cells that work together to
perform a function in an organism.
Ex. muscle tissue, blood, liver tissue
Organ
A group of tissues that perform
a
function
Ex. An eye contains many kinds of tissue working
together.
i.e. blood vessels, pigment tissuse, connective
tissue, etc.
Organ System
A group of organs that perform a
function
Ex. The circulatory system is composed of veins,
capillaries, arteries, and the heart. All these
organs move
blood.
Organism
An independent living unit.
Ex. blue whale, you, mushroom, amoeba
