Objectives Review the types of rehab options and continuing care services associated with the current mental health system in Minnesota Learn the principles of recovery and implementation in practice Examine how principles of practice ensure cultural responsiveness in a recovery‐ oriented mental health system. A person’s cultural experience often shapes the recovery path that is right for him/her Exists on a continuum of improved health & wellness Emerges from hope and gratitude Involves a process of healing & self-redefinition Involves addressing discrimination & transcending shame & stigma Is supported by peers & allies Involves re-joining & rebuilding life in the community Recovery is a reality MN Adult MH Division Guiding Principles A recovery based service system promotes Hope. People will have a sense that things will improve & life’s goals can be met. Providers of mental health services will build on a person’s strengths & welcome peer & family involvement. Holistic Approach. Providers of mental health services will recognize the whole person: mind, body, spirit, culture & community. There is Personal Choice. People will have a recognition that setbacks and sense of empowerment & personal successes are both parts of responsibility. When asked what would be helpful in their road to recovery, our immigrant clients expressed the following: Respect Understanding Some one who knows about their culture Spoke their language Familiar with their community Helps them get a job and training English class Gives them hope Respects their spirituality
