Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal
GOAL:
I will be able to:
1. discover relationships between angles formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal.
Use the figure below for the following questions:
Step 1
Write down all of the pairs of angles that satisfy the following terms:
a. Corresponding Angles:
b. Alternate Interior Angles:
c. Alternate Exterior Angles:
d. Same-Side Interior Angles:
Step 2
Using a protractor, measure each angle in the above diagram and record your results in the diagram.
Step 3
Using the angle measures that you have just found, fill in the blanks of the following conditional
statements:
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the:
a. corresponding angles are _______________.
b. alternate interior angles are _______________.
c. alternate exterior angles are _______________.
d. same-side interior angles are _______________.
Step 4
Confirm your conjectures above by drawing two more parallel lines (trace your ruler on each side to make
2 parallel lines) cut by a transversal and measuring their angles in the space below.
Step 5
Draw two lines that are not parallel and then draw a transversal. Measure the angles once again and
determine if the same rules apply to two non-parallel lines cut by a transversal.
Query: What is the minimum number of angles in the diagram you drew in step 4 (and the diagram from
the first page) that you have to measure in order to determine the measure of all of the angles? Step 5?
