Charting Scientific Breakthroughs
William Harvey
• An English doctor and teacher
• Wrote An Anatomical Treatise on the
Movement of the Heart and Blood in Animals,
which provides a basic understanding of how
the human body works.
Nicolaus Copernicus
• Polish man…considered the founder of modern
astronomy
• Introduced the heliocentric hypothesis—the
Earth and other heavenly bodies turn on their
axes and all revolve around the Sun
Andreas Vesalius
• A Flemish physician and anatomist established
the principle that scientific knowledge is found
by observing nature, not by reading about it in
ancient books
Galileo Galilei
• Italian scientist who made discoveries such as the law
of inertia, the invention of his telescope, astronomical
observations, and proving the Copernican hypothesis
• His greatest legacy is the perfection of the scientific
method
Isaac Newton
• Scientist from England who made contributions
to the understanding of motion, gravity, heat
and light.
• Created a system of advanced mathematics
called calculus
