What is Geology?
According to Wikipedia, “Geology is
important for mineral and hydrocarbon
exploration and exploitation, evaluating
water resources, understanding of natural
hazards, the remediation of environmental
problems, and for providing insights into
past climate change.”
What is Geology?
•
Geology is also a part of geotechnical
engineering and is a major academic
discipline.
• Geology provides us with an insight
into the history of our planet or the
Earth by providing the major proofs for
the evolutionary history of life, plate
tectonics and past climate.
Who Are Geologists?
•
•
Geologists study about the solid,
liquid and matter that is part of our
planet and its actions reactions in
history that have helped to mould it.
Geology
degree
holders
are
generally called geologists.
•
•
•
Geology is more of applied science than
theory and biology, physics and chemistry all
are used in the study along with other
sciences.
Geologists don’t work in a laboratory; they
work outdoors unlike scientists in other fields.
As the work type makes them work more
outside than inside.
Gloves, glasses, mining tools, pickaxes
and magnifying glass are used as tools
for exploring various materials.
 Geologists are engaged in exploration
for mining companies in search of
metals, oils, and other Earth resources.

Sub-branches of Geology
Physical geology (Geophysics):
It is related to the physical system and
physical properties of the Earth and its
environment , and the use of quantitative
methods for their analysis.
 Petrology: Studies the origin,
composition, distribution and structure
of rocks.

Sub-branches of Geology



Mineralogy: The study of minerals, its
composition and properties
Structural Geology (Tectonic): The study of
the three-dimensional distribution of rock units
with respect to their deformational histories.
Stratigraphy: Studies rock layers (strats) and
layering (stratification). It is primarily used in the
study of sedimentary and layered volcanic rocks.
Sub-branches of Geology



Paleontology: is simply the study of ancient life; the
study of fossils to determine organisms' evolution and
interactions with each other and their environments (their
paleoecology).
Crystallography: is the experimental science of
determining the arrangement of atoms in the crystalline
solids.
Mining geology: an applied science which combines
the principles of economic geology and mining
engineering to the development of a defined mineral
resource.
Sub-branches of Geology


Geology engineering (Geotechnics): is the
application of scientific methods and engineering
principles to the acquisition, interpretation, and use
of knowledge of materials of the Earth's crust and
earth materials for the solution of engineering
problems and the design of engineering works.
Hydrology: study of the movement, distribution,
and quality of water on Earth and other planets,
including the hydrologic cycle, water resources and
environmental watershed sustainability.
The work geologists do is not
easy and similarly, geology as a
subject is also not easy.
Therefore, students tend to take
assignment help services for the
same.
