Responsibility of Muslims Towards Others Humanity is in a crisis today Cause: Lack of accountability Islam has the solution Applying the model of the Prophet of Islam and His Companions in today’s world So let’s ask our non-Muslim brothers and sisters………... “If Islam and all its signs were wiped off the face of the earth, what would be lost for you?” How are we benefitting those we are supposed to benefit? My focus today is Muslims The purpose of my talk is to remind myself and my Muslim brothers and sisters of the example of our Prophet and how it is the best solution today for a world in dire straits. My request to my non-Muslim brothers and sisters is to remind us about our duties when we fail to comply. So please listen carefully. How would you like to live in a society based on justice, concern for one another and harmony between people? 6 The Event 1. 1428 years ago a window opened in the heavens and Allah spoke to mankind. 2. The message was the same that had come many times before in the history of mankind. 3. The difference was that this was the last time that this message would be sent. That message was Islam 59:22-24: He is Allah. Besides whom there is no deity: the One who knows all that is beyond the reach of a created being’s perception, as well as all that can be witnessed by a creature’s senses or mind: He, the Most Gracious, the Dispenser of Grace. He is Allah. Besides whom there is no deity: the Sovereign Supreme, the Holy, the One with whom all salvation rests, the Giver of Faith, the One who determines what is true and false, the Almighty, the One who subdues wrong and restores right, the One to whom all greatness belongs! Utterly remote is God, in His limitless glory, from anything to which men may ascribe a share in His divinity! He is Allah, the Creator, the Maker who shapes all forms and appearances! His [alone] are the attributes of perfection. All that is in the heavens and on earth extols His limitless glory: for He alone is almighty, truly wise! Who am I? Sovereign Vicegerent Changing the Perspective Sovereign Vicegerent • Law maker • Responsible to/for nobody • Not accountable to anyone • Good = Whatever pleases Himself • Implement the Law • Responsible for all in society • Accountable to Allah • Good = Whatever pleases Allah Because we are responsible 41:43 [And as for you, O Prophet,] Nothing is being said to you but what was said to all Messengers before your time. Behold, your Rabb is indeed full of forgiveness - but He has also the power to punish most grievously! Islam invites mankind to recognize the reality of One Creator & Sustainer who alone is worthy of worship, to obey only Him in our lives because one day we will all return to Him and answer for our beliefs and actions. Reality does not change because we refuse to believe it Mercy of Allah Hadith Qudsi: 34: The Prophet Muhammad quoted Allah as saying: “O son of Adam, were your sins (so great as) to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.” 13 Allah sent a Demonstrator 33:21 You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern of (conduct) for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day and who engages much in remembrance of Allah. Burden of the Standard Bearer The duty of every Muslim today as always, is to carry forward the message of the Prophet by being ‘Standard Bearers of Islam’. A ‘Standard Bearer’ is one who emulates and exemplifies the standard he espouses and is a walking, talking model of that standard. Credibility falls through the gap between walk and talk 5 – Critical aspects of His 1. Connecting Allah life to the people 2. Householder 3. Neighbor 4. Businessman 5. Ruler The Muslim’s responsibility is to emulate His Standard Connecting Allah to the people 12:108 Say [O Prophet]: "This is my way: I invite towards Allah with clear evidence - I and they who follow me." And [say:] "Limitless is God in His glory; and I am not one of those who join partners with Him!" Convey Islam by word & deed 3:110: You are the best (most beneficial) of peoples ever raised up for (the benefit of) mankind; You enjoin good (Al Ma’aruf) and forbid evil (Al Munkar) and you believe in Allah. It is the duty of the Muslim to live Islam fully so that the message is clear from his speech and actions There is no such thing as a non-practicing Muslim because ‘Muslim’ means one who practices Islam There is no compulsion in Deen The Householder 73:20 Verily [O Prophet,] Your Rabb knows that you keep awake [in prayer] nearly two-thirds of the night, or one-half of it, or a third of it, together with some of those who follow you. Kind, humorous, charitable, helping, duty first Personal Conduct Treat people & environment with respect Share responsibility, housework, fun Your strength is to protect, not to oppress Your knowledge & wealth is a trust to share You are for others and in that is your true fulfillment Be a role model The Neighbor 4:36 "Worship Allah and join none with Him (in worship); and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakeen (the poor), the neighbor who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess.'' Ibn’Umar and Aishah (RA) reported: Rasoolullah said, "Jibril kept recommending treating neighbors with kindness until I thought he would assign a share of inheritance". [Bukhari & Muslim]. Everybody needs good neighbors Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet said, “By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.” It was asked, “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?‘” He said, “One whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil”. [Bukhari & Muslim]. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA): A man said to the Prophet “How can I know when I do well and when I do ill?” He replied, “When you hear your neighbors say you have done well, you have done well and when you hear them say you have done ill, you have done ill.” [Tirmidhi] ‘Rights’ in Islam 1. There are two kinds of ‘Rights’ that mankind will answer for on the Day of Judgment: 1. Huqooqullah (Rights of Allah) 2. HuqooquIbaad (Rights of the people) 2. The Prophet said that Allah may forgive His own rights as He wishes but will not forgive transgression against a person (anyone) until that person forgives it first. Accountability is the foundation of Islam Huqooq-ul-Ibaad Islam specifically mentions neighbors who are strangers and emphasizes their rights on the Muslims The neighbor has a right to be protected, to be treated with courtesy and kindness The Muslim is answerable before Allah irrespective of the neighbor’s religion Model of life in a pluralistic society based on faith and accountability Honoring covenants/promises 5:1: “O you who believe! Fulfil (your) obligations” “Render back trusts to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray the one who betrays you.” Abu Dawood, 3534 Advise of Rasoolullah to those going out in battle: “Do not be treacherous.” Muslim, 1731 Quality of a Munafiq: “When he enters into a covenant, he proves treacherous.” Bukhaari, 34; Muslim, 58. It is obligatory to pay taxes correctly in all lands where we live freely and practice Islam 25 The Businessman – Al Ameen 83:1-4 Woe to those that deal in fraud. Those who when they have to receive by measure from men extract full measure. But when they have to give by measure or weight, give less than due. Do they not think that they will be called to account? The Prophet said: “What would be a greater dishonesty than this that when you are speaking to your brother he may be thinking that you are telling the truth whereas you are deceiving him by telling lies.” (Bukhari) The Prophet said, “Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to tell the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to al fujoor (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and al fujoor (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may continue to tell lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.” [Bukhari] Truth is good business sense Concern for correct measure Concern for competitor Story: Refuses to sell garment for higher price Story: Sends customer to competitor Concern for customer Story: Jewellery business in Thailand All come before concern for profit But the profit never stops The Ruler 5:8 O You who Believe! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to Allah, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of any-one lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closest to Al-Taqwa. And remain conscious of Allah: Verily, Allah is aware of all that you do. 4:135 O You who Believe! Be staunch in justice, witnesses for Allah, even though it be against yourselves or your parents or your kindred, whether the case be of a rich man or a poor man, for Allah is nearer to both than you are. So follow not passion lest you lapse from truth and if you lapse or fall away, then lo! Allah is ever informed of what you do. Peace is the result of justice Justice is uppermost Narrated A’aisha (RA), “He said in this house of mine: O Allah, he who acquires some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them, You be hard upon him, and he who acquires some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them, You be kind to him.” [Muslim] “Whoever wishes to be delivered from the Fire and enter the Garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people, as he wishes to be treated by them.” [Muslim] Stand up for what is right Uphold human rights and justice Speak out against injustice “The pinnacle of faith is to speak the truth (for justice) before the tyrant.” Sayyidina Ali’s (R) case of the stolen chain mail armor The fundamental difference between civilization and barbarism is the rule of law Window of Opportunity In the life of every man and woman comes a time when they have a unique opportunity to make an impact and influence others. Those who succeed, are the ones who anticipate and prepare for it and recognize it and act when it opens. We are remembered, not by what we consume But by what we contribute. Who will cry when you die? > > When you came into the world, you were crying while everyone around you was laughing. Leave the world in such a way that everyone around you is crying while you are smiling. Our Window is open now What do we need to do? For thoughts & questions [email protected] www.yawarbaig.com
