People of the Word Lesson 17 “The Six Seals” Revelation Chapter 6 1 Revelation Chapters 1-5 Chapter 1 – Jesus & John – The Things Which You Have Seen Chapters 2&3 – Jesus’ messages to the churches – The Things Which Are Chapters 4&5 - The church is in heaven singing a new song – The Things Which Must Take Place Revelation Chapter 6 Here Comes da Judge 3 3 Sets of Judgments – Scenario 1 4 3 Sets of Judgments – Scenario 2 5 3 Sets of Judgments – Scenario 3 6 Revelation Chapter 6 Who is Opening the Seals John 5:27: “[The Father] has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.” John 8:16: “And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.” Revelation Chapter 6 “The First Seal – Who’s the Jockey?” The rider of the white horse in Chapter 6:1 is the Antichrist Revelation Chapter 6 “The First Seal” The first event after the church is raptured is the opening of the first seal. “…there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.” 2 Thessalonians 2:4 “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.” The Antichrist cannot be revealed and cannot be given His power until the church is taken out. Revelation Chapter 6 “The Second Seal” “Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.” This seal reveals that there will be great wars. Red and war = bloodshed Revelation Chapter 6 “The Second Seal” Romans 5:8-10: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” Revelation Chapter 6 “The Third Seal” “..there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine.” The wars (likely nuclear and biological) that come about as a result of the 2nd Seal will lead to severe crop and food shortages – namely famines. The scales are like balances – food will be measured out and rationed Revelation Chapter 6 “The Fourth Seal” “.. there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.” 6.7 billion people on the earth; ¼ = 1.7 billion A Perspective on the 4th Seal “The Fourth Seal” Revelation Chapter 6 “The Fourth Seal” Matthew 16:18: “on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” 2 Peter 3:9: “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” John 10:9: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” Revelation Chapter 6 “The Fifth Seal” “I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.” Revelation Chapter 6 “The Sixth Seal” “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"” Matthew 24 vs. Revelation 6 19 The Causes of God’s Wrath Romans 1:18: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” Romans 2:5: “But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.” 20 The Causes of God’s Wrath Romans 2:8: “But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.” Ephesians 5:6: “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.” Colossians 3:5-6: “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.” 21 The Causes of God’s Wrath Idolatry Lust Evil desires and greed Impurity Disobedient Sexual immorality Rejecting the truth and following evil Unrepentant heart Those who suppress the truth Godlessness Self-seeking Stubbornness Wickedness 22 We All Deserve It Ephesians 2:3 states, “All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.” What is wrath? The Greek word for wrath is “orge” (pronounced orgay). This word means “violent passion” or “justifiable abhorrence”. It also incorporates concepts including punishment, anger, indignation, and vengeance. Webster’s dictionary defines wrath as, “strong vengeful anger or indignation; retributory punishment for an offense or a crime: divine chastisement.” Psalm 103:8-10 “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.” The Lesson & Our Response God is merciful; He is gracious; and, He is slow to anger. However, the time is coming when this same God who offers all this grace will demonstrate that He is true to His Word, and it will be too late. 1. Thank God for the provision we have through Jesus 2. Ask Him to fill us with the love, passion, and trust Jesus has for His Father 3. Believe God will honor this request and use this power of love and trust and reach out to those He brings into our lives to tell them the truth – the whole truth. 26 Blessed Assurance Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. 27
