No Name Calling Week The West Babylon Science Department The scientific scenario… • A group of scientists have been studying a population of reindeer up North and discovered a genetic mutation among them. Genetic Mutations – A genetic mutation is a change in DNA • Genetic mutations can lead to a change in an organisms physical appearance • Sometimes mutations can be harmful to the organism • Sometimes mutations can be helpful to the organism • Sometimes mutations can start off as harmful and become helpful – Environmental conditions often determine whether a mutation is harmful/helpful What was the reindeers mutation? • The reindeer with the mutation who the scientists have named Rudy, had a feature that has never been seen before. It is called Bioluminescence. – Bioluminescence is the ability for an organism to create light. • Fireflies and jellyfish use bioluminescence You may have heard of Rudy’s story… • Rudolph, the rednosed reindeer had a very shiny nose and if you ever saw it you would even say it glows. In the case of Rudy, the mutation started off as a harmful one… – The scientists noticed interesting behavior among the other reindeer in the herd. – They started socially shunning Rudy by laughing and calling him names and they wouldn’t let him join in any reindeer games. But then the environment changed… • Then one foggy Christmas eve Santa came to say: "Rudolph with your nose so bright won't you guide my sleigh tonight?" …and Rudolph’s mutation became a helpful one • Then how the reindeer loved him as they shouted out with glee… "Rudolph, the rednosed reindeer you'll go down in history." What’s the point? • Rudolph’s story shows us how it is good to be different. • We need to practice acceptance for all living things. • It is the differences (mutations) that have allowed different species to evolve and be successful in their environment The moral of the story…. • Treat your peers with respect. • It is our differences that make us special and we need to show acceptance of these differences.
