Dubai is one of the
seven emirates (酋长
国) of the United Arab
Emirates (UAE). It is
located south of the
Persian Gulf and has
the largest population
with the second-largest
land territory of all the
emirates, after Abu
Dhabi.
The earliest recorded mention of Dubai is in 1095, and the
earliest settlement known as Dubai town dates from 1799.
Dubai was formally established in the early 19th century,
and its oil resource was discovered in the year 1966.
The modern emirate of Dubai was created after the UK left the area in 1971.
Today, Dubai has emerged as a global city and a business hub. Although
Dubai's economy was built on the oil industry, currently the emirate's model of
business, similar to that of Western countries, drives its economy, with the effect
that its main revenues are now from tourism, real estate, and financial services.
Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large
construction projects and its luxury consumption.

Economy
Dubai lies directly in the
Arabian Desert. However,
Dubai has become a famous
global city.
Although Dubai's economy
was built on the back of the oil
industry, revenues from oil and
natural gas currently account
for less than 6% of the
emirate's GDP.
Dubai's oil reserves have
diminished significantly and
are expected to be exhausted
in 20 years. Real estate and
construction (22.6%), trade
(16%), tourism (15%) and
financial services (11%) are
the largest contributors to
Dubai's economy.
Real Estate
In Dubai, there are more than 250,000 foreign labourers and
about one fifth of the world’s cranes. According to statistics, in
recent years Dubai has invested 100 billion dollars in real
estate. Owing to its highly developed real estate, Dubai is called
“the paradise for architects”.
Real Estate
Burj Khalifa Tower,
also known as Burj Dubai,
is currently the tallest manmade structure ever built, at
828 m, 160 floors. The tower
was officially opened on
January 4th 2010, and it cost
more than 2 billion dollars.
Tourism
The Burj Al Arab (帆船酒店) is a luxury hotel located in Dubai.
At 321 m, it is the second tallest hotel in the world. The Burj Al
Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m out from the beach, and
is connected to the mainland by a private bridge.
It is always known as the first “ 7-Star Hotel ” of the world.
Prices of rooms vary from about $1,000 to $27,000 per night.
Tourism
