1. Quickwrite:
Pretend that you are bank customer who wants to withdraw
money (savings) from your bank and you are told by the
bank-teller that there is NO money.
What might be the cause of such a situation?
What options would you have as a customer?

Have you ever heard of conditions during the Great
Depression? What are your impressions of this time period?
1. The Stock Market Crash of 1929:
oDow Jones Industrial Average climbed to
191, 122, and finally 381.
oBlack Thursday, Oct. 23, 1929 – Stock
prices fell slowly. Investors began to sell
& stock prices fell.
oBlack Tuesday, October 29, 1929 – 16.4
mill. Shares sold.
oStock Market lost all gains of entire year.
• 2. Bank Failures
oOccurs when a bank is unable to meet its
obligations to its depositors
oBank deposits were uninsured and as
banks failed people simply lost their
savings.
oSurviving banks unwilling to create new
loans.
• 3. Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board:
oAfter the stock market crash, individuals
from all classes stopped buying items.
oLed to reduction in the number of items
made and thus a reduction in workforce.
oPeople lost their jobs and unable to keep
up with paying for items bought with
installment plans.
• 4. American Economic Policy with Europe:
oBusinesses gradually began to
fail. Govt. passed the SmootHawley Tariff in 1930 to protect
American companies.
oCharged high tax for imports
leading to less trade between
America and foreign countries.
• 5. Drought Conditions:
oMassive drought in the Mississippi Valley
in 1930; around the same time.
oMany could not pay their taxes or other
debts and had to sell their farms for no
profit to themselves.
oThe area of the drought nicknamed: “The
Dust Bowl.”
