Warm-up: Sept 25, 2013
• Write down the following questions:
1. What is the equation for photosynthesis?
2. What organelle carries out
photosynthesis?
3. What type of organisms carry out
photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis
1. What is it?
Photosynthesis is the
turning of Carbon
dioxide and Water
into Glucose and
oxygen, with the use
of energy from the
sun.
2. Why do we need
photosynthesis?
• The only source of
energy is the SUN.
• Humans (and ALL living
things) need energy to
survive.
• We cannot harness and
use the energy from the
sun directly; plants must
convert it into FOOD
energy for us through
photosynthesis.
3. Where does photosynthesis
occur?
Plants do it.
In the organelle called
the chloroplasts with
a pigment called
chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll
This pigment absorbs
energy from the
sunlight and uses it
for the energy needed
to make the
photosynthesis
reaction go.
4. What is the formula for the
reaction of Photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sunlight →
Sugar (Glucose) + Oxygen Gas (Waste Product)
What happens to the sugar?
The sugar is then transported through
tubes in the leaf to the roots, stems,
and fruits of the plant.
1. Some of the sugar is used
immediately by the plant for energy.
2. Some is stored as starch
3.Some is built into a more complex
substance like plant tissue or
cellulose
***Fortunately for us, plants often
produce more food than they
need,
which they store
1. Stems: example Celery and
Asparagus
2. Roots- Radishes, Carrots,
Potatoes
3. Seeds: sunflower seeds and
beans
4. Fruit
