
The Romantic period lasted about 95 years,
starting 1715 and ending 1810.


Well done! The actual dates are 1815 to 1910.
The Early Romantic period is considered to be
from 1800 to 1850
The Late Romantic era being the rest of the
time, i.e. 1850 to 1910
Composers

Beethoven was one of the first composers to
cross from Classical to Romantic

Mendelssohn was an Early Romantic composer.

Tchaikovsky was a Late Romantic composer
Current Events

The Industrial Revolution was happening
This had practical effects on the instruments
themselves with valves and keys on which brass and
woodwind instruments depended being improved.
 This lead to an increase in the numbers of these
instruments in the orchestra.
 The piano was also improved and it overtook the
harpsichord. This led to less dynamics in the solo
instrument in concertos and in general in the
orchestra.


Orchestras were much larger than in previous
periods with more even mixtures of brass,
woodwind and strings as opposed to a
dominance by the string instruments.
Instruments that were invented or saw an
increasingly large role in orchestras included:
