Gods and Goddesses
The following is a list of the Gods, Goddesses, Mortals and historical figures from which
you will select one for your project. Make a list of 5 or 6 figures you would like to learn
more about. Bring the list to class on Monday so that if you do not get your first choice
you will have your list on hand to help you choose another.
Zeus – King of Olympus and the supreme ruler or the gods and goddesses.
Hera – Queen of the Olympus and wife of Zeus Goddess of marriage. Pomegranate and
the peacock
Poseidon- The god of the Sea lost a battle with his brother Zeus for control of the sky
Athena – The goddess of wisdom.
Hades – Ruler of the Underworld
Apollo – The god of light, healing and music.
Artemis – The twin sister of Apollo, she is the goddess of the hunt and protector of girls
Hestia - The eldest sister of Zeus, she is the goddess of the hearth. Protector of the city
home and family
Dionysus – The only god on Olympus whose mother is a mortal. The youngest of the
gods he is the god of wine.
Hephaestus – son of Zeus and Hera the blacksmith the god of fire
Ares- The god of war not heroic battles but destructive ones He was the son of Zeus and
Hera and was hated by the other gods
Demeter – Sister of Zeus, she is the goddess of the harvest taught men to grow corn with
her daughter Persephone on her lap.
Aphrodite – the most beautiful of the goddesses the goddess of love.
Hermes –the messenger god he escorted the dead to the underworld the god of
shepherds, merchants, travelers and thieves.
Prometheus – with his brother ordered by Zeus to repopulate the earth with living
creatures created out of the river clay. He stole fire from the gods and gave to man
Epimetheus – lavished gifts upon the animals he created
Asclepius (Asculapius) was the god of healing. His father was Zeus (Jupiter) and his
most famous child was Hygeia. The medical profession adopted his sign, a snake
wrapped around a staff.
Eros (Cupid) was the god of love. A person shot with one of his arrows fell in love He is
shown as an infant with wings holding a bow and arrows.
Eos – Mother of the four winds
Helios – The sun god.
Pan – The god of nature was the god of the woods and pastures. He was also the protector
of shepherds and their flocks. Pan was half man and half goat. The ancient people
believed he had a wild temper. They also thought he could fill humans and
animals with sudden terror and fear. The word "panic" comes from his name.
Echo- - a Nymph fell in love with narcissus
Narcissus – remembered for having fallen in love with himself.
Themis second wife of Zeus she was goddess of justice her scales weighed the innocent
and guilty
