Honoring God Reverently…
and Relevantly
…an eight week study of 1 Corinthians 12-14
discovering God’s desire for you and the church!
1 Corinthians 12:1-3
1Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be
ignorant. 2You know that when you were pagans, somehow or
other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of
God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”
except by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7
4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are
different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different
kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good.
“charismaton”
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the
message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by
means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to
another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous
powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between
spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to
still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work
of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as
he determines.

1 Corinthians 12:12-27
12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and
though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with
Christ. 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—
whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the
one Spirit to drink.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the
foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the
body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not
belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part
of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the
sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would
the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in
the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If
they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there
are many parts, but one body.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27
21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the
head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22On the contrary,
those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with
special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated
with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no
special treatment. But God has combined the members of the
body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so
that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts
should have equal concern for each other.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27
26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is
honored, every part rejoices with it. 27Now you are the body of
Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Baptism in the Spirit
Baptism in the Spirit
Mark 1:8
“I have baptized you with water;
but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Baptism in the Spirit
Acts 2:1-11
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of
them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5Now there were staying in
Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When
they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because
each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed,
they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then
how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and
converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the
wonders of God in our own tongues!”
Baptism in the Spirit
Acts 11:15-18
15“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on
us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John
baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 So
if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord
Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?” 18 When they
heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So
then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”
Baptism in the Spirit
Acts 19:1-7
1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior
and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked
them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there
is a Holy Spirit.”
3So
Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4Paul
said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the
people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On
hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When
Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they
spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
Baptism in the Spirit
Romans 6:1-10
1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may
increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any
longer? 3Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ
Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him
through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from
the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly
also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old
self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7because anyone who
has died has been freed from sin. 8Now if we died with Christ, we
believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ
was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has
mastery over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but
the life he lives, he lives to God.

significant experiences subsequent to conversion.
BODY LIFE:
How to biblically value yourself and others
2.The reasons the analogy works
1 Corinthians 12:13
13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether
Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all
given the one Spirit to drink.
Drinking the Spirit
John 4:7-14
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her,
“Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the
town to buy food.)
9 The
Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a
Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews
do not associate with Samaritans.)
10 Jesus
answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is
that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he
would have given you living water.”
Drinking the Spirit
John 4:7-14
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the
well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you
greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank
from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?”
13 Jesus
answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty
again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life.”

How to biblically value yourself and others
3. You need me! What is lost when someone
has a “poor self-image” in Jesus.
1 Corinthians 12:14-19
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot
should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it
would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear
should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it
would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole
body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole
body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God
has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted
them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As
it is, there are many parts, but one body.

4. I need you! What is lost when someone is left behind.
1 Corinthians 12:21-25
21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the
head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22On the contrary,
those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with
special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated
with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no
special treatment. But God has combined the members of the
body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so
that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts
should have equal concern for each other.

5. Body Life: Deeply caring and valuing one another.
1 Corinthians 12:12-26
26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is
honored, every part rejoices with it.
