NIAID Small Business Program
Programmatic Interests
Mike Minnicozzi, Ph.D.
Program Officer-DAIT
1
How NIAID Is Organized
 Division of Extramural Activities (DEA)
Oversees the funding and management of extramural grants and
contracts, manages the NIAID research training program, and conducts
initial peer review for grant and contract proposals that address an
Institute-specific need or focus



Division of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (DAIDS)
Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT)
Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID)
Three programmatic divisions direct and manage the extramural research
portfolio. Most of the NIAID budget supports research at academic and
research institutions outside the Institute (referred to as extramural
research) through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.
Division of Intramural Research (DIR)
 Division of Clinical Research (DCR)
 Vaccine Research Center (VRC)

DAIDS’ Mission
Help ensure an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic by
increasing basic knowledge of the pathogenesis
and transmission of the HIV, supporting the
development of therapies for HIV infection and its
complications and co-infections, and supporting
the development of vaccines and other
prevention strategies.

DAIDS’ Resources

Preclinical Services
 In vitro, in vivo efficacy evaluations, and chemical synthesis

Access to DAIDS Laboratory Quality Assurance Contracts
 Immunology QA and Virology QA Programs

Access to DAIDS Clinical Trial Networks

DAIT’s Mission
To understand the immune system and how it functions
in maintaining health and its role in numerous diseases
including:
 Asthma and allergic diseases, such as hay fever and contact
dermatitis
 Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders
 Autoimmune diseases, such as insulin-dependent diabetes
mellitus and systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as in
acquired immunodeficiency diseases, other than AIDS
 Tissue and cellular transplantation rejection and tolerance
 Development of medical countermeasures to protect against,
mitigate, and treat the effects of radiation exposure
6
DMID Mission
Supports extramural basic through applied
research to control and prevent diseases caused by
virtually all human infectious agents except HIV
7
DMID Small Business-Areas of Interest
Identification and qualification of infectious diseaserelated biomarkers
Development of vaccines (includes enhancement and
formulation technologies)
Development of therapeutics
Development of point-of-care diagnostics
