SOCIALIZATION Who has the most influence on your Socialization?? Parents Peers Clothing- Religious Beliefs- College/Career- Alcohol- Dating- School- What is it? How would you define socialization? Who is involved? How does it relate to society? Slang terms of YOUR generation… Definition: Socialization- learning how to participate in group life What would we be like without it? Boring, isolated, chaotic, extreme introvert, animalistic… Socialization is part of personality formation! We consider most actions to be natural and “normal” THAT’S NOT THE CASE!! Nearly ALL aspects of social life are learned I.E. walking patterns *United States VS traditional India When does socialization begin? AT When does socialization end? AT BIRTH DEATH The most important and critical time for socialization = Early years (approx. 0 to 5) Walking, talking, loving Monkeys and Socialization The Experiment: Early 1960s Conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow It showed the negative effects of social isolation on monkeys Details of the experiment: The monkeys were removed from their mothers at birth and given two options; a fake wire monkey or a fake cloth monkey. Even though the wire monkey was the only source of food the baby monkeys went to the soft and warm cloth monkey. The monkeys growing up with the wire mother were psychologically stressed and withdrawn. How does Harlow’s experiment relate to humans? Can we even compare the results to humans? YES! Human example= isolated (or feral) children 1) Anna- forced to live in a small room until age 5 and she only was given milk to drink 2) Isabelle- hidden with her unwed mother (the mother was deaf) in a dark room until Isabelle was 6 years old. What difference does the mother make? Genie’s characteristics Weight- 59 pounds Height- 54 inches Incontinent Unable to chew Barely able to swallow Unable to focus her eyes beyond 12 feet Unable to cry Could not fully extend her arms or legs Could not tell the difference between hot and cold Spoke very little. “Stopit”, “Nomore”, and other negative She only understood about 20 words Update on Genie Currently living in California in a home for adults 54 years old not much recent information ISOLATED CHILDREN ARE ABUSED BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND SOCIALLY. It is hard to ever recover after missing the early years of socializationespecially if you were isolated by yourself. These kids may have otherwise led very normal lives… Socialization and the Self What is the self? Made up of two parts… 1. “me”= the part created through socialization 2. “I”= the part that accounts for unlearned, spontaneous acts “I” want to steal a piece of your candy but lets check with “me” first… Socialization and the Self cont… Keep this in mind: Socialization involves indirect reinforcement through modeling. Self-concept- your image of yourself as having an identity separate from others What is your self-concept? Take a minute to write down several (4-5) sentences about yourself. NO PHYSICAL FEATURES!
