Doctrine of Baptisms
The foundation of:
1. Repentance from dead works, and of
2. Faith toward God, of
3. The doctrine of baptisms, and of
4. Laying on of hands, and of
5. Resurrection of the dead, and of
6. Eternal judgment.

Doctrine of Baptisms - Definitions
• The word “doctrine” in Hebrew 6:2 is the Greek
word “didache” which mean instruction
• The word “Baptism” in the verse is “baptismos”
which means ‘washing’.
• The verb to baptize is a transliteration of the
Greek verb ‘baptizo’ which gave two nouns
derivative in the New Testament: Baptismos
(Masculin) and Baptisma (Neuter).
• The New Testament bible uses more the neuter
form ‘baptisma’ for Christian baptisms than the
masculine form ‘Baptismos’.
Doctrine of Baptisms – Definitions
Cont’1
A. ‘Baptizo’ comes from the causative word ‘bapto’ which
means “to dip”.
1. “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus so
that he may dip [bapto] the tip of his finger in water and
cool my tongue” Luke16:24
2. “It is he to whom I shall give the morsel when I have
dipped it [bapto].” John13:26
B. "While it is true that the basic root meaning of the Greek
words for baptize and baptism is immerse/immersion, it is
not true that the words can simply be reduced to this
meaning, as can be seen from Mark10:38-39, Luke 12:50,
Matthew3:11 / Luke3:16, 1Cor 10:2” ( William A. Dyrness

Cont’2
“And when the Pharisee saw it, he was amazed that He
had not first washed [baptizo] before dinner.” Luke
11:38
“For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash
[nipto] their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of
the elders And when they come from the market,
except they wash [baptizo], they eat not. And many
other things there be, which they have received to hold,
as the washing [baptismos] of cups, and pots, brasen
vessels, and of tables.” Matthew7:3-4
Three different Baptisms
Due to limited time, I will only share about these
three forms of Baptism as found in the New
Testament
1) John’s Baptism or Baptism of Repentance Mark 1:4
2) Christian Baptism - Matt28:19
3) Baptism in the Holy Spirit - Acts1:5
John’s Baptism
1. Origin of the expression:
“And he [Paul] said to them, Then to what were you baptized?
And they said, To John's baptism.” Act 19:3
2. What was John’s Baptism all about?
“John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming the
baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” Mark 1:4
3. Public Confession:
“And all the land of Judea, and those of Jerusalem, went out to
him [John] and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River,
confessing their sins.” Mark 1:5
4. Fruits of repentance:
“But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his
baptism, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who has
warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth
therefore fruits worthy of repentance” Matthew 3:7-8
John’s Baptism Cont’2
Examples of fruits worthy of repentance
a. “And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
He [John] answered and said to them, He who has two
coats, let him give to him who has none. And he who has
food, let him do likewise.” Luke 3:10-11
b. “And tax-collectors also came to be baptized and said to
him, Teacher, what shall we do? And he said to them,
Continue to do no more than that commanded to you.”
Luke 3:12-13
c. “And the soldiers also asked of him, saying, And what shall
we do? And he said to them, Do not forcibly extort anyone,
nor accuse any falsely. And be content with your wages.”

John’s Baptism Cont’2’
“And when all the people heard Him, even the tax
collectors justified God, having been baptized with
the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers
rejected the counsel of God against themselves, not
being baptized by him.” - Luke 7:29-30 MKJV
« Et tout le peuple qui l'a entendu et même les
publicains ont justifié Dieu, en se faisant baptiser du
baptême de Jean; mais les pharisiens et les
docteurs de la loi, en ne se faisant pas baptiser par
lui, ont rendu nul à leur égard le dessein de Dieu.»

John’s Baptism Cont’3
Who was John the Baptist?
“Then they said to him [John], Who are you so that we may
give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say of
yourself? He said, I am "the voice of one crying in the
wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord," as the
prophet Isaiah said.” - John 1:22
The Purpose of John Ministry
a. To help people see Salvation:
“[A]s it is written in the book of the Words of Isaiah the
prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. Every
valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be
brought low, and the crooked shall be straight, and the
rough ways shall be made smooth. And all flesh shall see
the salvation of God.“ - Luke 3:4-6
John’s Baptism Cont’4
b. Jesus is the salvation:
“And he [Simeon] came by the Spirit into the
temple. And as the parents brought in the child
Jesus, to do according to the custom of the Law
concerning Him … For my eyes have seen Your
Salvation” Luke2:27, 30
LOGIC:
1. John’s Baptism followed repentance. 2.
Remission of sins followed John’s Baptism
(Mk1:4-5).

Who could baptize in John’s Baptism?
“Therefore when the Lord knew how the
Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and
baptized more disciples than John (though
Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His
disciples), He left Judea and went away again
into Galilee.” - John 4:1-3
My personal view – anyone in harmony with the
teaching of the Leader.
John’s Baptism - End
Why did Jesus got baptized by John?
a. “For you were not called to this? For Christ also suffered on
our behalf, leaving us an example, that you should follow
His steps, He who did no sin, nor was guile found in His
mouth,” 1Peter 2:21 -22
b. “Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan, to John, to be
baptized by him. But John restrained Him, saying, I have
need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me? And
answering Jesus said to him, Allow it now, for it is becoming
to us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him. And
Jesus, when He had been baptized, went up immediately
out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened to Him,
and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and
lighting upon Him.” Matthew3:13-16
Christian Baptism
1. Original distinction between the two water baptism:
“And Paul said, John truly baptized with the baptism of
repentance, saying to the people that they should believe
into Him coming after him, that is, into Jesus Christ. And
hearing, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Act 19:4-5
2. Formulation:
“Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:19
N.B: Act 9:29/Colosians3:17 – in the name of Jesus could also
mean in accord with Jesus’ authority or in accord with what
Jesus taught.

Purpose of the Christian Baptism:
1. Connected To salvation:
a. “And He [Jesus] said to them, Go into all the world,
proclaim the gospel to all the creation. He who
believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who
does not believe will be condemned.” Mar 16:15-16
b. “when God waited patiently while the ark was being
built. In it a few, that is, eight persons, were saved by
water. Baptism, which is symbolized by that water,
now saves you also, not by removing dirt from the
body, but by asking God for a clear conscience based
on the resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah,” 1Peter3:2021 ISV

“To put it most simply, the power, effect, benefit, fruit,
and purpose of Baptism is to save. No one is baptized
in order to become a prince, but as the words say, to
"be saved". To be saved, we know, is nothing else than
to be delivered from sin, death, and the devil and to
enter into the kingdom of Christ and live with him
forever.” — Luther's Large Catechism, 1529
“Reformed and Methodist Protestants maintain a link
between baptism and regeneration, but insist that it is
not automatic or mechanical, and that regeneration
may occur at a different time than baptism.”

2. Connected with Forgiveness of sins:
“Peter answered them, ‘Every one of you must repent and
be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the
forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the Holy
Spirit as a gift.” Act 2:37-38 ISV
3. Connected To Washing away sins
“And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen you to
know His will and to see the Just One, and to hear a voice
out of His mouth. For you shall be His witness to all men of
what you have seen and heard. And now what do you
intend? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins,
calling on the name of the Lord.” Act 22:14,16
What about Eph 1:7? “In Him we have redemption through
His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of
His grace, “

4. Spiritual Benefit of baptism
a. Baptism into death to behave in newness of life
“Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into
Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we were
buried with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was
raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father; even so we
also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4
b. Baptism linked to death, resurrection and forgiveness
“When you were buried with the Messiah in baptism, you
were also raised with him through faith in the power of God,
who raised him from the dead. Even when you were dead
because of your offenses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
God made you alive with him when he forgave us all of our
offenses,” Colossians 2:12 ISV

Since Baptism is so important, why do we read
this?:
“And I also baptized the household of
Stephanas. Besides these, I do not know if I
baptized any other. For Christ did not send me
to baptize, but to preach the gospel; not in
wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ
should be made of no effect.” 1Co 1:16-17

Other texts about Christian baptism
1. “But when they believed Philip preaching the gospel,
the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name
of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and
women.” Act 8:12
2. “Then Simon himself believed also, and being
baptized, he continued with Philip.” Act 8:13
3. “And as they passed along the way, they came on
some water. And the eunuch said, See, here is water,
what hinders me from being baptized? Philip said, If you
believe with all your heart, it is lawful. And he answered
and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God …
And they both went down into the water, both Philip and
the eunuch. And he baptized him.” Act 8:36-38

4. “And instantly scales as it were fell from his
eyes, and he [Saul] instantly saw again. And rising
up, he [Saul] was baptized.” Act 9:18
5. “…Then Peter answered, Can anyone forbid
water that these, who have received the Holy
Ghost as well as we, should not be baptized? And
he commanded them to be baptized in the name
of the Lord …” - Act 10:46-48
6. “And when she [Lydia] was baptized, she and
her household,…” Act 16:15
7. “And taking them in that hour of the night, he
[the jailer] washed from their stripes. And he was
baptized, he and all his, immediately.” Act 16:33
Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Introduction: Seven New Testament references
1. “I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he
that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I
am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy
Spirit and in fire” - Mat 3:11 ASV
2. “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize
you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier
than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to
unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in
fire:” Luk 3:16 ASV
3. “And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in
water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt
see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the
same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.” John 1:33

4. “I baptized you in water; But he shall baptize you in the
Holy Spirit.” Mark 1:8 ASV
5 “for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.” Act
1:5 ASV
6. “And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said,
John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized in the Holy Spirit.” Act 11:16 ASV
7. “For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and
were all made to drink of one Spirit.” 1Co 12:13 ASV

“Laws of Synonyms”:
a. Baptism in the Holy Spirit as the receiving of the H.S and
the falling on of the H.S: The Story of Cornelius
“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all
them that heard the word.” Act 10:44
“Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be
baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as
we?” Act 10:47
“And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as
on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the
Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye
shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.” Act 11:15 -16
N.B: Baptism in HS = receive H.S = H.S fall on (Peter exegesis)
Baptism in the Spirit Cont’3
b. Baptism in the Holy Spirit as receiving the H.S or the
H.S falling upon: Story of Samaria
• Act 8:15 who, when they were come down, prayed for
them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:
• Act 8:16 for as yet it [Holy Spirit] was fallen upon
none of them: only they had been baptized into the
name of the Lord Jesus.
• Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they
received the Holy Spirit.
N.B: Remembering Peter exegesis in Acts 10-11, these
verses above could well be referring to the Baptism of
H.S too based on the “law of synonyms”.
Baptism in the Spirit Cont’4
c. Baptism in the Holy Spirit as receiving the H.S: Story
of Ephesus
. “and he said unto them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did
not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was
given.” Act 19:2
. “After the people heard Paul say this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul
had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on
them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”

N.B: Based on Peter exegesis of Jesus words with regards
to a similar experience in Acts 10-11, we could
reasonably use the “law of synonyms” on these verses
of Acts 19. Adding one new connection: Came on

d. Baptism in the Holy Spirit as receiving the H.S: Story of the Pentecost
“And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the
beginning.” Act 11:15
“And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in
one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the
rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were
sitting. And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of
fire; and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
them utterance.” Act 2:1-4
“Being therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of
the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath poured forth this,
which ye see and hear.” Act 2:33
N.B: What about John20:22? “And when He had said this, He breathed on
them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Baptism in the Holy Spirit Cont’5’
“When Jesus breathed on his disciples and said to them ‘receive the
Holy Spirit’ (John20:22), it probably was an acted-out prophecy of
what would happen to them at Pentecost. In this same context – in
fact, in the verse immediately preceding – Jesus had told them
something that would not happen until Pentecost: ‘As the Father has
sent me, even so I send you’ (John20:21). But even though he said
this before he had ascended into heaven, he did not really send them
out to preach the Gospel until the Day of Pentecost had come.
Therefore the word was looking forward what will happen at
Pentecost. It is best to understand the words in the next sentence,
‘Receive the holy Spirit,’ in the same way – he was speaking in
advance of something that would happen on the day of Pentecost.” –

The Purpose of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
a. Power for testify the Lord Jesus:
“But you shall receive power, the Holy Spirit
coming upon you. And you shall be witnesses to
Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Act 1:8
b. The Manifestation of the Holy Spirit:
“But there are differences of gifts, but the same
Spirit … But to each one is given the showing
forth of the Spirit to our profit.” 1Corinthians
12:4,7

How to Receive the H.S:
1. Ask the Father
a. “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:13
b. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and
comes down from the Father of lights,” James 1:17
2. Allow other people to pray for you (gifted Christians
preferably)
a. “For I long to see you, so that I may impart to you some
spiritual gift, to you for the establishing of you.” Romans
1:11
b. “They [the Church of Jerusalem] sent Peter and John to
them; who when they had come down, prayed for them
that they might receive the Holy Spirit.” Act 8:14-15
