What does baptism mean? The word “baptism” is in Greek “baptisma” while “to baptize” is in Greek “baptize”. In Greek “baptizo” means to be dipped, to submerge, to overwhelm”. To baptize something in water means to put it under the water. Baptism in Jesus’ day was understood to be a rite of initiation into something new. To be water baptized was a sign of adherence to the teachings of the respective teacher. Water baptism for the Christian symbolizes and appropriates our death, burial and resurrection with Christ. It means identification with Christ. “Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4) What do I need to do? First is believe and trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior. “He who believes and is baptised shall be saved.” (Mark 16:16) Second confess and repent of your old sins, which literally means to turn or go a different direction. “Repent every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38) Do I need to be baptised to be saved? To answer this, let’s look at Romans10:9-11 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in you heart that you are made right with God , and it is by confessing with you mouth that you are saved.” and Ephesians 2:8-9 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift of God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. According to these scriptures, repentance and belief are all that is required. To make baptism a requirement would diminish what Christ did on the cross. But let’s not forget the importance of baptism: That it is a public statement of your faith and your first act of obedience. What do I wear?
