Quote Identification Practice for Exam:
“I run my tongue over the gross gummy
flap. The sharp edge of the flap cuts my
tongue. I taste my blood. IT’s face
suddenly pops up in my mind.”
For the quote above:
(1) When did it happen in the plot of Speak?
(What major events happened before/after?)
(2) Why is it significant to Speak’s main themes &

For the quote above:
(1) When in the story did it happen?
(2) Why is it important?

EXAMPLE RESPONSE
(1) When: Melinda said at the beginning of the book while at the
first pep rally with Heather. At this point in the story, we know
Melinda is an outcast, but we have no idea why yet.
(2) Importance: Just as she does in this quote, Melinda uses
sarcasm throughout the book to avoid protect herself from
difficult emotions and to show disapproval. As an outcast
who has been raped, Melinda is envious and hateful toward
the cheerleaders who are popular and comfortable in their
beautiful bodies. She uses sarcasm to poke fun at them
rather than admit that she has been robbed of the chance to
be happy, liked, and comfortable like them. As the book goes
on, Melinda becomes less sarcastic and more honestly
serious as she begins to admit to the pain of her rape.
(3) Device: Tone: This quote shows a clear tone of sarcasm.
Melinda is humorously comparing the cheerleaders to
reindeer to criticize them. She does this, perhaps, because
they travel in a pack like reindeer: prancing around after a
leader.

What seeds need to germinate: Seeds are
inefficient. If the seed is planted too deep, it
doesn’t warm up at the right time. Plant it too close
the surface and a crow eats it. Too much rain and
the seed molds. Not enough rain and it never gets
started. Even if it does manage to sprout, it can be
choked by weeds, rooted up by a dog, mashed by a
soccer ball, or asphyxiated by car exhaust.
