Biblical Principles for Managing Money in the Family 2 Put Money in the Proper Perspective • Job 1:21 “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.” • 1 Timothy 6:7 “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” God Gives Me Money by Enabling Me to Work • Genesis 3:19a “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground.” • Exodus 20:9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work.” • 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” Work to Provide for Your Needs • 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 “But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” Work to Provide for Others’ Needs • 1 Timothy 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” • Ephesians 4:28 “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” • James 2:8 “If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you do well.” I Receive Comfort so that I May Give Comfort to Others • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” God Gives Me Money Through Saving and Investing • Proverbs 21:20 “There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it.” • Matthew 25:14-30 “Well done” pronounced on the stewards who invested and brought a return. God Gives Me Money by Giving • Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you...” • “...good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom.” – Good measure is fair–all else is above fair. • “For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” – We set the standard for God’s blessings! The Way I Handle Money Will Effect My Eternity • Luke 16:10 “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” – A poor manager of little would be a poor manager of a lot. – How am I handling what God has given me? The Way I Handle Money Will Effect My Eternity • Luke 16:11 “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” – Failure to be faithful with God’s money will deprive one of true riches like joy, contentment and, even, heaven. The Way I Handle Money Will Effect My Eternity • Luke 16:12 “And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?” – If one does not respect things belonging to others, why should he have anything of his own? The Way I Handle Money Will Effect My Eternity • Luke 16:13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” – Man cannot be committed to Christ and driven by love of money. The Way I Handle Money Will Effect My Eternity • Luke 16:14-15 “Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. And He said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.’” – Undue emphasis on money will cause one to ridicule preaching on giving and things of eternal value. Learn to be Content • 1 Timothy 6:6-8 “Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” • Hebrews 13:5-6 “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” Learn to be Content • Philippians 4:11 “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content….” • James 4:1-2 “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.” Beware of Greed and Covetousness • Luke 12:15 “And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’” • Ephesians 5:5 “For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.” • Colossians 3:5 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” Gambling Is Destructive • Andy Rooney (60 Minutes) said, “How can we teach kids that hard work is the way to success if they hear radio commercials, paid for by their government, suggesting the way to get rich is to bet on a number?” • Donald Trump (owner of the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ) said, “People will spend a tremendous amount of money in casinos, money that they would normally spend on buying a refrigerator or a new car. Local business will suffer because they’ll lose customer dollars to the casinos.” God Expects His People to be Fair in Dealing with Others • Deuteronomy 25:13-16 “You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a heavy and a light. You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small. You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure, that your days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. For all who do such things, all who behave unrighteously, are an abomination to the LORD your God.” God’s People Will Not Insist on Collateral that Is Sorely Needed • Deuteronomy 24:10-13 “When you lend your brother anything, you shall not go into his house to get his pledge. You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge out to you. And if the man is poor, you shall not keep his pledge overnight. You shall in any case return the pledge to him again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness to you before the LORD your God.” God’s People Will Not Withhold Wages Needed for Support • Deuteronomy 24:14-15 “You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether one of your brethren or one of the aliens who is in your land within your gates. Each day you shall give him his wages, and not let the sun go down on it, for he is poor and has set his heart on it; lest he cry out against you to the LORD, and it be sin to you.” God’s People Should Not Co-sign for a Loan • Proverbs 22:26-27 “Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge, One of those who is surety for debts; If you have nothing with which to pay, Why should he take away your bed from under you?” God Expects His People to Pay Their Taxes • Luke 20:20-25 The chief priests sent spies to use his words to arrest him and deliver him to the authorities. “Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher,…Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me? Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” God Expects His People to Pay Their Taxes • Romans 13:6-7 “For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.” God’s People Will Work Hard • Romans 12:11 “Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” • Colossians 3:23-24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
