1. How did the world‘s major river systems support the development of early civilizations?
People used the water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Fishers speared, hooked, and
netted fish from the rivers and farmers raised crops and grazed their livestock on the
wide, fertile plains. With so many resources, river valleys provided people with a good
place to build permanent settlements. With food surpluses, some people could do
activities besides farming. This allowed people to create more-advanced cultures, leading
to early civilizations.
2. Use the terms alluvial plain and silt to tell how agriculture developed in Mesopotamia.
Southern Mesopotamia lay on the low, flat land of an alluvial plain, a plain formed from
silt, a fine soil, left behind by streams or rivers.
3. What role did the Ubaid people play in the development of Mesopotamian civilization?
The Ubaid culture formed the foundation for the civilization that eventually developed in
southern Mesopotamia through their farming, irrigation systems, rules, organization,
architecture, art, etc.
4. Do you think that a civilization would have developed in the Tigris and Euphrates Valley
if irrigation had not been developed there? Explain.
No, because the people who lived there would not be able to develop farming which is a
bases for specialization and free time to develop culture.
