lifestyle?

approach to medicine?
How did life in Ancient
Egypt affect Medicine?
• Life in Ancient Egypt was dependent on the
river Nile
• Specialised society – priests, doctors,
lawyers and craftsmen like stonemasons,
painters who made great buildings.
• Sons and daughters were trained by their
fathers from an early age to do the same
job so professions were passed through
families.
Why was writing important?
• The most important difference
between Egyptians and
Prehistoric people is that the
EGYPTIANS HAD DEVELOPED
WRITING!
• This affected Medicine
because it meant people could
write things down.
• They wrote about illnesses and
treatments and kept a record
of what worked and what
didn’t.
• Used a process of trial and
error.
Thoth
•Egyptian medical books = the
Books of Thoth, (Thoth = God of
Writing, Wisdom and Medicine)
• Used these books to write
medical book the ‘Papyrus Ebers’
•Books give VERY clear
instructions on how to treat illness
– including the exact words to be
spoken and medicine or treatment
to be given.
•If a doctor followed the
instructions and a patient died the
doctor wasn’t blamed.
•However, if the doctor didn’t
follow the book EXACTLY and the
patient died, then the doctor was
executed.
What are the key
similarities and differences
between Prehistoric and
Egyptian societies?
