THE GODS OF OLYMPUS
 After the battle of the Titans the world divided into
three parts, between the three brothers, Zeus,
Poseidon, and Hades or Plutonas. Zeus took the sky,
Poseidon the sea and Hades took the underworld
which is also called Hades.

The land and Olympus were not given to
anybody. Zeus was the most powerful among the
gods. His brothers, sisters and kids acquired
different positions. There were many gods and
goddesses. The most important though were the six
gods and six goddesses of Mount Olympus, also
called the Olympian gods:

humans.

wisdom.

the family.

Greek Mythology - Gods & Goddesses
Zeus - Ο Δίας/Ζευς

Zeus, the powerful god, the king of gods and humans. He was the sixth child of
Kronos and Rhea. He managed to dethrone his father and become the ruler of the
world. His symbol and his weapon was the thunderbolt. Hephaestus was making
them for him. He sat on a golden throne in the god's palace, on mount Olympus.

From there, he was ruling the world. He was fair but tough. Albeit to the human or
god, that went against his will. The king of gods would throw the thunderbolts without
mercy. His face had an unusual beauty. Every one of the gods respected Zeus. Next
to him was the throne of his wife Hera. Zeus loved and respected his wife but was
also famous for his affairs with other women.

Zeus had many battles when he was trying to take Kronos' throne. He fought his
father and the titans. He also fought with Typhoeus (Τυφωνέας) a monster, son of
earth, that had 100 dragon heads. But who could go against Zeus' power and his
thunderbolts? The ancient Greeks adored him. They believed in his fairness. Many
temples and statues were built for him. One of the most renown was the statue of
Olympian Zeus in ancient Olympia (Ολυμπία).

Roman Numerals
 The language of the ancient Romans, Latin, was
also the language of educated people until a
couple of hundred years ago.
 If someone wanted something to seem
important, he would write numbers in Roman
numerals.
 These days, you will see Roman numerals on
clocks and watches, on old buildings and
tombstones, and at the end of movies, showing
the year that the movie was made.
Lesson
 Once you know seven M=1000
numbers, it is easy to
read Roman
C=100
numerals. All you
have to do is add and
subtract them. The
X=10
numbers are:
I=1
D=500
L=50
V=5
(There's no
zero).
Roman Numerals
Lesson Cont’d
Romans did not have special symbols for
numbers, so they used letters. They did
not have lower-case letters, either, so they
used capital letters. You will have to, too.
Roman Numerals
Lesson Cont’d

Now, here are the three rules for making numbers with
Roman numerals:

If you put numbers of the same size together, then you add them.
II=1+1=2
XX=10+10=20
XXX=10+10+10=30

If you put a small number to the right of a large number, then you add
them, too.
XV=10+5=15
VIII=5+3=8

If you put a small number to the left of a large number, then you subtract
the small one from the big one.
Example: IX=10-1=9 CM=1000-100=900

Roman Numerals
Lesson
 That's it! Try to read these numbers:
 CMV
LXX
XLI
MCMLVI (which is the year I was born).
 You won't use Roman numerals often. On the
other hand, they are so easy that there is no
reason not to know them!
Roman Numerals:
Can You translate these roman numerals
into regular numbers?
