Standard Deviation Practice Resource sheet
Algebra 1
Name: _____________________
Period: _____
Part 1: Given the data below, find the standard deviation of each set to the nearest tenth.
1) Test Grades of an Algebra I Class:
82, 60, 60, 59, 51, 93, 69, 82, 62, 81, 100, 68, 100, 53, 85, 93, 62, 75, 62, 51, 62
2)
Prices of Used Cars
($)
11,400
5,800
7,500
10,400
11,100
3) Average Monthly Temperatures in degrees Celsius of New Town:
10, 13, -4, 5, 12, -3, 0, 7, 25, 28, 35, -15
Part 2: Without doing any calculations sort the data sets from smallest to largest standard deviation.
Use your calculator to check your results.
A) 10, 10, 10, 13, 14
B) 10, 10, 13, 40, 300
C) 0, 10, 20, 30, 40
Part 3: In your own words answer the following questions.
1) If a data set had a standard deviation of zero, what would that tell you about the data?
2) Although no data is listed, the standard deviation is known to be 125. What does this tell you about
the data?
3) Why might standard deviation be useful as a measure of spread over the range?
Part 4: Extra Credit: Be able to explain how you arrived at your solution.
1) A data set with 5 numbers in it has a standard deviation of about 79 and a mean of 60. Four of the
five numbers are 10, 20, 30, and 40. What could the 5th number be?
2) From 1984 to 1995, the winning scores for a golf tournament were 276, 279, 279, 277, 278, 278,
280, 282, 285, 272, 279, and 278. Using the standard deviation for this sample, find the percent of
these winning scores that fall within one standard deviation of the mean.
