World History Class Syllabus

Welcome to 8th grade World History. I look forward to working with you this year.
These guidelines will help you enjoy a successful year. You and your parents should read
them together.
This class will encourage you to think critically about the various forces that combined
to shape today’s world. Emphasis will be placed on geographic impact, development of
civic knowledge/responsibilities, and emerging economic systems within a
chronological-historical context.
Critical thinking and analysis will be very important in this class. We will read, write
and discuss daily. In addition to individual work, we will work in groups on daily lessons,
on projects and presentations, do plenty of research and, hopefully, have a little fun. My
hope is that you will gain an appreciation for history as an ongoing story full of exciting
people and places. You are creating history every day with everything you do and,
believe it or not, some day students will study the life and times of YOU!

My Expectations
Students will not engage in any behaviors that interfere with the educational opportunities
of other students.
Supplies
1. One three-ring binder
2. Plenty of loose- leaf notebook paper (any rule)
3. Blue or black pens or pencils
4. Box of colored pencils (I have some but if you want your own, get some)
Grading
I will follow HCS grading policy of 60% summative assessments and 40% daily/home
work.
Homework
Usually, homework will be what students didn’t finish in class. There will be plenty of
projects that will need to be worked on at home as well.
Late Work
HCS policy. Students have up to 2 weeks to turn in work missed due to excused
absences. I will deduct 10% per day for unexcused late work.
Every assignment and a brief description of what we do daily will be on Edmodo
Conferences
For students: If you are having any problems in this course of for any other reason,
please let me know, and we will set up a time to talk.
For parents: Either of us may request a conference at any time. My planning period is
5th period (12:14-1:06) and I am typically at school every morning around 7:00.
Progress reports
I will send home a progress report every 4-5 weeks
