SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Pt. XII
Eph 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation….”
The Roman helmet was highly ornate, having intricate details
etched into it. During parades, the top of the helmet was adorned
with bright horse hair standing straight up or brightly colored
feathers which might almost reach the ground.
Using the “helmet” as his example of salvation, Paul is saying that
when a person walks in the fullness of his salvation, he becomes
someone who is noticed.
Made of bronze with mounted pieces of armor to protect cheek and
jaw, it was extremely heavy; therefore the interior was lined with
spongy material.
The word “helmet” is from (gr- perikephalaia). The word “peri”
means “around“, “kephalaia” means “the head”. The compound
“perikephalaia” denotes a piece of armor that fits very tightly
around the head.
These helmets were meant to protect from enemy weapons, but
especially the battleaxe. A weapon designed with the purpose of
attacking the “head” area of an opponent. So the Roman helmet was
not merely a beautiful piece of weaponry, it was something intended
to save a man’s head.
What does the word Salvation mean? Literally it means saved or
delivered. In the broadest sense of the word, it means to be brought
into a safe place. Scripture, particularly the New Testament, extends
salvation to include deliverance from the penalty and power of sin.
In the Old Testament the primary saving event is the Exodus.
1. “And Moses said to the people, “__ ___ __ ______. Stand still,
and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you
today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again
no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold
your peace.”
Ex 14:14-15
Some say that the Old Testament does not link salvation with the
forgiveness of sins. But, the recurring cycle of national sin, foreign
oppression, national repentance, and salvation by a God sent
“judge,” however, witnesses the linkage.
2. “So the children of Israel ___ ____ in the sight of the Lord. They
forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.
Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He sold
them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia;
and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.
When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up
a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel
the son Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. Judg 3:7-9
3. “And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord.
So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel,
because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.” Judg 3:12
4. “ But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord
______ __ a deliverer for them; Ehud the son Gera, the Benjamite,
a left-handed man….” Judg 3:15
See ( Judg 4:1-4; 6:1,7,12)
5. “Therefore You delivered them into the hand of their enemies,
who oppressed them; And in the time of their trouble, when they
cried to You, You heard from heaven; And according to Your
________ _______ You gave them deliverers who saved them from
the hand of their enemies. Neh 9:27 See (Ps 106:34-46)
God’s sending of a deliverer is in effect God’s act of forgiveness of
the penitent.
6. “Help us, O God of our salvation, For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and _______ _________ for our sins.” Ps 79:9
Perhaps the best Old Testament example for personal salvation
from sin is:
7. “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and ______ me by Your
generous Spirit. Ps 51:12
In the New Testament, two major perspectives were, Christ’s saving
work and The Believers experience of salvation.
Christ’s Saving Work: Jesus’ earthly ministry made salvation a
present reality for His generation. His healing ministry effected
salvation from disease.
8. “And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go
in peace, and be healed of your affliction” Mk 5:34
9. “Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you
well.” And immediately he received ___ _____ and followed Jesus
on the road.”
Mk 10:52
10. “And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made
you well.” Lk 17:19
Jesus offered God’s forgiveness to hurting people.
11. “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to ___ _________, “Son
your sins are forgiven you.”
Mk 2:5
12. “Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in
peace.”
Lk7:50
Assured salvation for the repentant (Zacchaeus).
13. “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house,
because he also is a son of Abraham….”
Lk 19:9
Through such encounters, Jesus fulfilled the goal of His ministry.
14. “…For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which
was lost.”
Lk 19:10
The apex of Christ’s work is His sacrificial death.
15. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to ____ ___ ____ a ransom for many.” Mk 10:45
16. “ Now all things are of God, who has __________ us to Himself
through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of
reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world
to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has
committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2Cor 5:18-19
17. “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood
He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having ________
_______ redemption.” Heb 9:12
Here, Ransom, Redemption and Reconciliation are synonyms for
salvation. When was the day of your salvation? The day Jesus died
on the cross! (You still had to “believe and receive”)
Christ’s Present Saving Work is primarily as a mediator.
18. “Who is he that condemns? It is Christ who died, and
furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who
makes intercession for us.” Rom 8:34
19. “Therefore He is also able to save to the _________ those who
come to God through Him, since He always lives to make
intercession for them.” Heb 7:25
20. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may
not sin. And is anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ ___ _________. I Jn 2:1
His future saving work chiefly concerns Christ’s coming again;
21. “So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those
who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from
sin, for salvation.” Heb 9:28
And salvation from the wrath of God’s final judgment.
22. “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we
shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were
enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son,
much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”
Rom 5:9-10
