Fungus Characteristics:
-Eukaryotes
-Cell walls made of chitin
Traits
Prokaryotic, lives harmlessly in your gut.
Eukaryotic, base of the marine food web.
No nucleus, no cell membrane, prevented with
vaccines
No nucleus, flagella, killed by antibiotics.
Nucleus and flagella, causes disease.
-Heterotrophs and usually decomposers
-Reproduce Sexually and Asexually
Examples:
Mushrooms, Yeast, Thread-like Fungi, Ich (Fish disease), Athlete’s Foot, Ringworm
Anatomy:
•
Rhizoids – kind of like roots, but not.
•
Mycelium- formed by filaments called hyphae. Function in eating and
reproduction. 2 for 1!
•
Sporangiophores- release haploid spores. The "gills" of a mushroom are an
example.
•
Stolon – also made of hyphae, but above the ground. Can connect with other
fungus stolon to form a gametangia, which leads to sexual reproduction of sorts.

about by means of a flagella. What is the adaptive advantage of a photosynthetic aquatic
organism that is able to move from place to place? (Hint: Remember that photosynthesis
