This enables us to ensure that all students are taught by specialist subject teachers from Year 7 to Year 13. It is important that in Year 7, students transfer their timetable to their planner, and it would be advisable to display your son or daughter’s timetable at home on the refrigerator or a noticeboard. Whilst many students are very organised, it is our experience that parents need to check their son or daughter’s timetable in order to make sure that they have packed the right equipment and that they remember to bring their homework in to school. Secondary school is a big change for Year 7 as they move away from having a few teachers in Year 6, to having around 14 different staff each teaching them a different subject. This is why we ask that parents check that their child is preparing their bag the night before. SETTING We set the children in Year 7. However the setting arrangements vary according to the subject. Currently, all students are placed into a band upon entry: E, X, Y or N. The express stream is the top band in Year 7. Below the E band we have the X band, and then the Y band. The Nurture Group are students who require extra support as they make the transition from primary to secondary school. After the students are placed in a band, we set from within these bands. It is not possible to timetable all of Year 7 to have exactly the same subjects within a band at the same time, and so some subjects share setting arrangements in X and Y: Maths, Science and ICT English and the Humanities (RE, History and Geography) Languages and Music This means that where subjects share that setting, your child will be in that class for all of these subjects in these clusters. Students follow a carousel for Art and Design and Technology. They have double lessons in this subject in order to give them sufficient time to develop new skills. Students rotate on the carousel every 9 weeks to enable them to work with a different specialist teacher. This enables the teacher to work within their specialist area e.g. Ceramics, Textiles, Product Design, Painting etc. We review the sets each half-term and parents receive a termly grade report at the end of term showing the progress that their child has made in each of their subjects. At the end of the year, students will sit exams/complete practical assessments and it is then that we review the bands for the following academic year. The Headteacher determines any moves between bands following consultation with staff on all Year 7 students. D:\493732959.rtf HOMEWORK Students in Year 7 are expected to spend approximately one hour on each homework task set and on average students will be set two homeworks per night. In the Arts subjects, students work towards a project in each unit and so homework here may be preparation or practice towards this, and will not necessarily be written homework. Teachers will always seek to give students the appropriate amount of time in order to complete work to the highest quality. Homework set in one week may be due to be handed in the following week, in order to give students time at the weekend to complete it in sufficient detail. If your son/daughter is struggling to keep up with homework or you think that they are not receiving enough, please contact Mrs Connolly, the Deputy Headteacher or the relevant Head of Department. There are four homework timetables included in this booklet. Each one is specific to your child’s band. Your child has been given a pupil login and parent login for showmyhomework in school. This must be activated within 30 days of being issued or the personalised login will become inactive. If you have not received this, please contact Mrs Connolly. Showmyhomework is available as a free app for Apple and Android mobile phones. Pupils and parents can check the homework set by teachers on our online homework calendar: https://btg.showmyhomework.co.uk. Alternatively, if you log on to the school website www.btg.ac and click on the showmyhomework logo, this will also take you to the calendar. To check the homework set, please select the year group, subject and class. The online calendar will also give you access to documents that may have been issued in class or weblinks to support their learning and revision. If you use your login, this will show you the homework set specifically for your son/daughter. We recommend that you use your logins. This login will remain with your child each year and they do not need to be re-issued.
