No Brasil, a avaliação da competência de laboratórios de ensaios é feita pela CRE/Inmetro, em um processo denominado
acreditação, e auditorias são realizadas para determinar a conformidade do sistema de gestão com a NBR ISO/IEC 17025. A
acreditação dá ao laboratório reconhecimento nacional/internacional, já que o habilita a fazer parte de uma rede de Laboratórios.
Atualmente o Laboratório de Fitopatologia da Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura (LFITO) é credenciado pelo Ministério da
Agricultura e Pecuária (MAPA) e está pleiteando à acreditação junto ao Inmetro, sendo necessário a implementação de alguns
requisitos para atender plenamente a NBR ISO IEC/17025.

Validation of the global land Cover 2000 map.

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC), in partnership with 30 institutions, has produced a global land
cover map for the year 2000, the GLC 2000 map. The validation of the GLC2000 product has now been completed. The accuracy
assessment relied on two methods: a confidence-building method (quality control based on a comparison with ancillary data) and
a quantitative accuracy assessment based on a stratified random sampling of reference data. The sample site stratification used an
underlying grid of Landsat data and was based on the proportion of priority land cover classes and on the landscape complexity. A

Tocopherol profile of Brazil nut oil from different geographic areas of the Amazon region

The tocopherol content of Brazil nut oil from different Amazon regions (Manicoré-AM, Rio Preto da Eva-AM, São João da
Baliza-RR, Caroebe-RR, Belém-PA, and Xapurí-AC) was investigated by normal-phase high-performance liquid
chromatography. For all authentic oils, two isomers: α- and γ-tocopherols were observed (37.92-74.48 µg
g-1, 106.88-171.80 µg g-1, respectively), and their levels were relatively constant among the oils having these geographic origins,
which would enable to distinguish Brazil nut oil from other plant oils for authentication purposes. Commercial Brazil nut oils

proposal presented is based on ASTM E70, NBR 7353, JIS Z 8805, BS 3145, DIN 19268, NBR ISO 17025 and other standards, as

The aim of this study was to find alternatives to reduce the cost of mass production of the South American fruit fly (A. fraterculus)
by looking for locally available products as protein source in the diet of adults to replace the imported product without changing
the quality parameters. Two yeast from a Brazilian company were evaluated. The quality parameters showed that the imported
hydrolyzed yeast used in the adult diet could be perfectly replaced by the local products tested, with a reduction of over 80% of
the cost of the diet. The quality of the produced insects remained the same and there were improvements in some quality
parameters such as the volume of eggs produced, number of adults flying and longevity under the stress.

Stringent quality control protocols must be used in order to guaranty that a particular medium is able to recover all sort of
organism that may be present in clinical samples. Our aim was to evaluate an alternative protocol that would allow us to detect
medium failure to yield quantitative growth of selected pathogens, and compare with the document M22-A2 from NCCLS. The
detection limit of Haemophilus influenzae was significantly different depending on media source. We conclude that for some

Quality evaluation of simvastatin compounded capsules

Simvastatin is commercially available as tablets and compounded capsules in Brazil. Very few reports regarding these capsules'
quality, and consequently their efficacy, are available. The pharmaceutical quality of 30 batches of 20 mg simvastatin capsules
from the market was evaluated by weight determination, content uniformity, disintegration (Brazilian Pharmacopeia), assay and
dissolution test (USP32 tablet monograph). A HPLC method was developed for assay, content uniformity and dissolution test, and
specifications were also established. Out of the 30 batches evaluated, 29 showed capsule disintegration within 45 min and

Toxicity effects of fungicide residues on the wine-producing process

We report the detection of several fungicide residues (Dichlofluanid, Benomyl, Iprodione, Procymidone and Vinclozolin) in red
and white bottled wines from two Portuguese wine-producing zones. Studies were done in order to evaluate the active compound
transfer percentage from grapes to the final product along fermentation process. We also investigated their effects in
Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeasts as well as their influence on the physical, chemical and organoleptic wine
properties. All the tested fungicides had a negative effect on in vitro yeast growth, with Dichlofluanid and Benomyl being the

Efectos del deterioro producido por mixosporidios de la especie Kudoa rosenbuschi en la musculatura
de Merluccius hubbsi

Parasitized and non-parasitized hake fillets obtained at fish processing plants were compared in order to assess the efects of Kudoa
rosenbuschi myxosporidia on muscle of Merluccius hubbsi. The following studies were carried out: a)incidence and severity of
parasitism; b)proteolytic and spoilage at a histologic level; c)pH and proximal composition in parasitized and non-parasitized
fillets; and c)parasitism action on gelified products. Gel strength, elasticity and organoleptic level in gelified products were lower
for parasitized samples. Recommendations are put forward as to conditioning and cooling of the catch and subsequent processing
in order to lessen the effects of parasitism.

The effect of marination on the shelf life of smoked eel (Anguilla anguilla) was investigated. The fish was hot smoked at 80°C for
90 min and separated into two samples: Lot A was immersed in a solution containing 4% acetic acid, 4% lemon juice and 10%
NaCl, then stored at 4°C during 7 days. After the marination process, samples were transferred to a diluted solution, containing
2% acetic acid, and 2% NaCl. Lot B was directly immersed in the same diluted solution. Chemical (total volatile basic nitrogen),
physical (pH), microbiological (Total viable count, coliforms, pathogen staphylocoques, sulphate reducing bacteria and

Samples of Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) were analysed for histamine content using the method of Lerke A. Peter, Porcuna
N. Martina and Chin B. Henry (1978) with modifications. The samples were previously exposed at room temperature for 18 hours
in order to increase their histamine content. Dilutions of 3,4 and 5 mg/ml of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The present
modification improves the Lerke, et. al. (op.cit.) methodology and makes it easy to use in the laboratory and in the field.

Estudios sobre factores que afectan la calidad de la merluza fresca

Among other results, it was found that when hake is handied property it maintains good quality levels up to 10 days after catch,
irrespective of season. Its total storage life in boxes with ice is approximately two weeks. Although total storage life remained
unchanged, it was found that quality levels tended to be significantly higher if overfilling of boxes was avoided, if the fish was
gutted immediately after catch, or if hake was stored in containers with seawater.

The relation between the moment at which a recall of Dutch custard is initiated and the direct costs of this recall was investigated.
A simulation model of the custard supply chain was developed to compare scenarios with and without a quarantine of 48 h at the
storage of the production plant. The model consists of three parts; first the distribution of a 24,000 L batch of custard over the
supply chain over time is simulated, second the time to detect spoilage bacteria with a recontamination test procedure is simulated,

In this article, the concept of traceability in food quality control is systematized. The interfaces among traceability, labeling,
brands, standards and certification are presented. In addition, the differences and connections between identification and
traceability are explained. The asset specificity of information and of the organization structures required to implant tracing
systems are outlined according to the Transaction Cost Economics (TCE). The importance and difficulty of establishing such
systems are described as functions of government interests, as well as the interests of various agents in the agro-industrial system.
