Professional Experience Information Technology Professional (ITP) Program Jan 1997 to present Network Administration and design student Workterm Position: Network Administrator at the Information Technology program classroom and administrative offices. For this workterm my duties included supporting 71 workstations and servers in constantly changing classroom configurations. I prepared classrooms of 30 workstations and two servers for classes including Lotus Notes Application Development, which included the installation of a Notes 4.1 server and user account establishment; Novell Administration and advanced administration courses involving the installation of several Netware servers (versions 4.11 and 3.11) with custom directory structures; there were also several Microsoft courses taught including Office 97, Frontpage97, Exchange, MS SQL 6.5, NT Enterprise, and TCP/IP. For each of these classes I would be responsible for the design of the server, its software and hardware, and its accounts and trust relationships for access. I would also document to procedures for the students to do further installations on their workstations. This has provided me with a wide knowledge of server types and versions, hardware requirements and configuration i.e. a triple-homed computer and a cross-over cable for MS TCP/IP, a single-master domain model for access to a MS SQL resource server, and hands on experience with the software client and server-side for each course. Further duties included the hardware maintenance of the labs’ 71 workstations, portables and servers. This included the replacement of Hard Drives, Disk Drives, Network Access cards, motherboards, and the configuration of CMOS and device drivers. These duties also included the arrangement of replacement and servicing for any of the labs computer, printers and ancillary devices with the suppliers. The Administration of a Windows NT 4.0 domain was a large part of my activities. I was responsible for the design and implementation of: user permissions to home folders, applications, and shared class work; server hardware upgrading with the ordering and installation of Hard Drives and SCSI cabling; refinement of server backup strategies and disaster recover, i.e. I implemented a RAID and UPS system and changed some inefficient maintenance procedures. I was solely responsible for the administration and design of Internet access with Microsoft Internet Information Server administration for on-line databases, student web pages, University of Victoria course class web and FTP services with account based access and logging; the writing of the labs zone DNS host table and labeling the computers for identification. Also included was the tracking of news and bugs in the software used through the monitoring of mailing lists, web sites, client comments and server logs. When I started my work term our production server has 17 service and configuration errors. I rectified these errors and implemented a design for the Web and file server that allows for growth, future functionality and simplified administration. A further experience in this workterm was the adjustments and custom solutions that were required for many of the courses in their first teaching. The solutions achieved required an understanding of the labs’ network topology and the effect of the course set-up on the rest of the campus network. This lead to two instances of having the labs port configurations changed making custom cabling and detaching parts of the labs’ network connectivity to the rest of the campus network. -----------------------------In the ITP program I have learned extensive detailed knowledge of Network design and implementation. Certifications: Certified Novell Administrator (C.N.A) Certifications (in Progress): Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (M.C.S.E) Apple Certified Server Engineer (A.C.S.E) Lotus Notes Certified Developer Software Human Resource Council Certified Information Technology Professional Other Training: Work place Skills: Time Management, Goal Setting, Project Management, Effective Meetings, Presentations (written and oral). Personal leadership skills for groups through being a group project manager in many occasions. Practical Experience I was the Project Manager on a consulting contract for a medical office database system & main technical resource/advisor for group projects and individual studies. I was appointed to the position of Network Administrator for the classroom and was required to deal with 'real' LAN support problems for 29 student workstations, including training sessions, change notifications and trouble support. During extracurricular time I started an Intranet with MS Internet Information Server for Windows NT. In addition I developed a corporate marketing web site, implemented a web page access form for our interstudent and instructor evaluations, and lead workshops in Web Page designing and UNIX commands. These skills have also had an applied component in a simulation of business structure and coordination through numerous all-company meetings and projects. Direct company wide involvement in professional presentations; e.g. RFP and system design proposals reviewed by members of the 'real' Information Technology (IT) field. This course is not designed to make technicians that cannot work efficiently with others. We are trained with equivalent focus to personal, business and technical skills to produce professionals in information technology with business and personal skills. Clearihue Macintosh Computing Facility Micro Computing Assistant Sept 1994 to Dec 1997 As a Micro Computing Assistant at the University of Victoria Clearihue Computing Facility (the MacLab) I was able to demonstrate many of my capabilities. My duties have ranged from tending to the day to day operations of the lab by monitoring user access, answering questions concerning computer usage, to maintaining the operation of the labs computers and printers. As a MacLab Assistant I become proficient in all of the lab's procedures. Common activities I performed include providing training and aid to University Faculty, Staff and Students on issues including network resource sharing, email usage, file translation, productivity application usage i.e. document formatting, Movie Digitization and editing; HP IIIsi and 4si printer maintenance; and account setup and directory creation on an AppleShare 4 server. I have also been involved in numerous special projects: The development and teaching of the "Internet; Teaching in the 21st Century" hands on course for the faculty of the Department of the English, Co-instructing a University Extension course in the set-up and development of World Wide Web servers for Canadian Museum administrators, Instruction of undergraduate writing courses on the use and functions of Aldus Pagemaker. The set-up of a live Line-Up cam that automatically generated a W.W.W. page of the Clearihue Computing Facilities foyer, Development of the first system setup for the new Power Macintosh computers the lab received, Photo capture with a Apple QuickTake and Connectix QuickCam, addition and editing of these images either static or live into web pages. During my personal time I have edited software to provide solutions for lab problems. I removed the printing abilities of Netscape, and Eudora and modified the behavior of LaserWriter print driver to ensure compliance with the Labs printing policy. To streamline the lab operations I have suggested a number of applications to aid users and staff. These solutions have become standard software used across the lab. Once familiar with the needs and issues of the lab's clients I was able to prepare for the majority of their questions and plan efficient strategies to solve their problems. The challenge of working through problems is one of the most intriguing and exciting aspects of this position. Achievements Strong faculty and student service with a dedication to provide solutions in a busy client service environment. Long term consistency and reliability as an employee. Consistent up keeping of lab policies and procedures After only three months of part-time work I was offered a full-time position and raise of responsibilities.
